HISTORY OF OUR WOMEN'S INSTITUTE continued Just to show how interested our women have been in the affairs of our community we have but to read the minutes of the meeting held in December 1919, at which the following resolutions were drawn up and read, For the past four years we have again been engaged in war-work-knitting, making quilts and packaging boxes for our boys over-seas. Also we have struggled harder than ever before to produce badly needed food. Rut our time has not all been spent in work. Many a happy hour we have spent together in each others homes, times which can never be forgotten and which have made our friendship all the stronger. Yet a sadness creeps over us when we recall the folks who used to be with us in all our work and pleasure, but who have gone up, and a twinge of fear creeps over all of us when we remember that we are all thirty years older than when our Institute was first formed. In,1958 to 1959 the branch members were going down and were in much need of new members to join. We were successful in getting new ones much younger and able to do the work and some of the past members joined again, which made up a prosperous group again. In 1962 we started having a Graduation dinner for the Grade Eight class. We also gave ten dollars to the student with the highest marks. These students were, 1962 Linda Reid, 1963 Marlyn Rowat and Pat Maxwell, 1964 Karen Chevis, 1965 Brian Sarrela, 1966 Paul Mosher, 1967 Lloyd LaRone, 1968 James Berry, 1969 Gordon Brown, 1970 Neva Brock, 1971 Mike Tulloch. We continued this until the year 1976. We have had bake sales, catered to wedding dinners and anniversaries, made quilts to be given to needy families. Gifts are given to the Cancer Society every year. Boxes of goodies are packed to Christmas time and taken around to the shut ins in town. It hasn't been all work and no play, every year we haver a day sponsored by the branch. This in in tours of important places or just dinner out for the members. In 1968 and 1969 benches were made and places in the park here in town with a plaque with the branch name on it. We have also sponsored the 4H Homemaking Girls Club. This started with one club and at one time had as high as 4 clubs. Cards are sent to the sick in hospitals also. In 1967 and 1968 we sponsored the St. John Ambulance Course held here in Iron Bridge. Articles have been donated to the Community Hall, Donations were given to Bereaved of our members] and our group has also taking on' the donating of and giving of prizes to the Fall Fair in Iron Bridge. We have also made donations to the mentally retarded school in Thessalon, bought a sewing machine to aid in 4-H sewing classes and senior sewing classes, and have helped out as much as possible. On July 24, 1964 we celebrated our Fiftieth Anniversary. We held a tea on Feb. 12, 1972 at the Community Hall to celebrate the 75th anniversary of the Women's Institute of Ontario.
