During the Winter of 1947 & 1948, we were approached by East York Toronto Kiwanis, regarding the forming of a Kiwanis Club in Dunbarton. We agreed that this was possible. A meeting was held with five present to discuss the matter & after several meetings our numbers increased & we were able to form The Dunbarton Pickering Kiwanis Club. We received our Charter on March 22nd. 1948, & on May we held our first Charter night at the Rouge Hill Inn. We now have a membership of 20, six of whom are Charter members & have nine Past Presidents active in the club. Every year since the club was founded we have had the honor of receiving an achievement award from Kiwanis International in Chicago. We have also had the distinction of having a District Lt. Governor, Robert Stroud, chosen from our club. The club was fortunate in procuring 6½ acres of land in Dunbarton for a park. We immediately made a start to have the grounds for a ball diamond, also put up swings & a maypole for the children. Later we proceeded to build a Refreshment Booth, also a Pavilion, to take care of our Carnival & Fall Fair. The club is very active in welfare work in the community and abroad, having at one time financed the education & transportation for a crippled child in Greece. Support to boys & girls & under priveleged children isone of its most valued achievements. Ever since the Dep't. of Agriculture discontinued the annual School Fair, the Club has been responsible for the Fair in which eleven schools take part. We supply the flower & vegetable seeds to the schools. This is one of the most worth while effort of boys & girls in the community. 1958 records show, 1400 exhibits were judged & cash prizes presented to winners, also trophies & other awards for highest points for any school & pupils. Other projects were: We sent six boys to the West End Y. M. C. A., Toronto for two years for training in leadership & swimming & took charge of their transportation. They have all received their diplomas. Also we sponsored swimming lessons for children at Sun Valley Park. Our Club have two wheel chairs, and crutches available to anyone in need.
