at King City greeting Grace bo unto you and peace from God our Father and praying always that you to gether with myself may bo perfected in every grace and virtue having mind that was in that in all thing wo may do His will to honor and glory of His name Three weeks received word that our annual Convention was to be held on Sept and in King City and that have not forgotten to pray that our Heavenly Father might who making and all who shall attend that it may a season of such annotating comes only to who ore willing to bo fitted for bless ing and service By the last Canadian I sent my quarterly letter the last for year I trust that each League will have received a copy this Ah I intimated in that letter this year since I left the I love has been a year so filled to that us I review it it seems to have many yearn It has a year of peculiar trial and of disappointment in regard to but in regard to God and His work it has been a year of Mich blessing mid encourage ment that I know not whore to begin to praise Him have faith to believe though I have had no direct news from any of you as Leaguers for more than three or four months yet I have faith to believe that vou have had a good year and as individual children of God and as of workers you ore stronger and more devoted with firm er hope in Jesus and triumph of His cause with clearer insight into plans and nearer to the cross than a year ago I have ordered copies of the Minutes of Japan Conference to bo sent to various parts of District ono to the Chairman Rev Matthews one to Mr Henry of Thorn ton and one to my sister in Aurora Perhaps if any of Leagues desire of the copies in order to familiar ize themselves with our work in Japan it may be possible to arrange to pass those copies around When I left four weeks ago there were very encouraging signs in tho church work so much so that I felt sorry to leave and would not have done so but that I felt it to bo unwise to remain longer in sweltering when the school had closed stu dents had gone and nothing that I could do but study the language which I can do better hero in the cool mountain heights than in the oppres sive malarial atmosphere of a largo city with open sewers and narrow streets and smells indescribable While you pray for this work and for the young men whom I been privileged to meet with and teach dur ing the year there are throe of whom I wish to tell you and for whom I ask your prayers more especially They all have very good command of English and have been for several years receiving instruction- in chris tian truth and been listening to gospel preaching they seem to be deeply in terested in the Bible and yet do not decide to accept Christ They are all intelligent young men good students in their college work they have been very kind to me inviting me to their homes and being willing at any time to do me any favor They come from homes and surroundings that strongly antiChristian They are in the bondage of skepticism two of them live in places whore there are no mis sionaries and no christians I spent two days in the home of on my way here He lives in a city of inhabitants and no missionary has yet lived there We have a preaching place in the city but no preacher last year except occasionally when one visited the place had ft feeling that the invitation to visit that home in that heathen city was something that was of God that I might perchance bo an instru ment to disarm them of their judics and prepossess them in favor of Christianity I was thankful for tho opportunity for I met with many friends of tho family with whom I stayed and also many of the teachers in tho public school and commercial school I distributed a few tracts and gave one man with whom I had a long conversation on the subject of Christianity a copy of the gospel in colloquial Japanese One evening after I had answered many questions about Niagara Falls farming in Cana da firo protection in our cities and other things of which they enquired man not knowing that I had not been long in this country asked mo whether I had yet preached on Chris tianity in Japanese I replied that I was not yet able to do that then ho asked me that if when could preach would I como to their 1898 city and preach if so ho would to hear me An old missionary of Presbyterian Church who has been in Japan for many years asked mo about my work a days ago I told him of my visit to city of tho visit I have just related to you He said that such visits were frequently better public addresses and lec tures During the year I have distributed over GOO tracts thinking that in this way may sow seed though I cannot as yet preach in language I have purchased ten dollars worth of religious books and com mentaries which I intend to put in the School for use of Students for as a man in his heart so is ho therefore I seek to get God into their thought In tho July No of Missionary Outlook there was a great deal of in formation about the work in Japan I have felt in such ways you could gain information about our work from those who wero more familiar with it than I In that there was an article on Rev P one of the oldest and one of tho most remarkable of missionaries in this land He has been lately called to his reward At a memorial ser vice which was held sine I came to Karnizawa one who knew Dr well said that the great character istic Of this mans strong nature was his kindness Ho was equally kind to the meanest coolie or to an officer of state he was never known to be un kind In a sermon preached by If Price Hughes in St James Hall in memory of another great man the Hon Glad stone the report of which I read in the Methodist Times preacher emphasized fact that Mr Glad stone was truly and nobly great of his goodness of heart and purity of life Ho said that wo each ono may bo equally great in king dom of heaven by being equally good Many times since have I thought of these things kindness and goodness During this coming year let us each seek so to live that we shall like these two great and honored men be noted for kindness of our disposi tion the goodness of our life In cause of temperance a de partment of Holy war too much neglected by many christians there will be need of loyal and devoted workers and room for sacrifice in Canada In every battle with forces of sin when a new departure must be taken and Forward march is tho order there seems to bo some who would halt and fear to go for ward I do earnestly hope and pray that now when the borders of the caravan of prohibition have been reach ed you will go up and possess the land and not tarry longer through unbelief and hesitancy in tho wilderness of licenses and sin Learned and able men may see giants and walled cities in the land but men of faith in God see rich fruit in the land of prohibi tion the fruit of purer lives and mora heavenlike homes tho fruit of a national conscience void of offence stain of bloodmoney the fruit of manhood and womanhood saved from degradation and shame of a land that will be a safe place for the weak one I cannot tell you how anxious I feel that Canada my country may indeed be in every sense tho home of the free May
