The first hundred were easily settled Then came on one oclock train and hey were not billeted when a special train arrived with over delegates from Illinois and the South ern States presented themselves Billeting Committee had their hands full all afternoon and still mora ar rived on tho evening train The church was packed when the President Dr Alva Morrill of Providence I announced from the platform that the serenade by the band in front of church was in honor of the American Christian Convention and the announcement was received with applause The Convention opened by very heartily sinking a hymn composed especially for occasion by Win J Warrener of Ohio an English man who has resided ill the Slates for over years expressing gratification for meeting together as brothers and a desire for tho people of one blood and one tongue to dwell in unity This was followed without interruption by America and God save the Queen and stripes have always lxcn and will be tho leaders in christian education and civilization to a better higher and sweeter life Who can read the possibilities if these two nations join ing hands and hearts The natural boundary lino is invisible but wo are joined by bridge that spans the Niagara and just so lot our hearts be united by bridge of faith and love In our welcome what we fail to say in words we hope to make up in acts The President briefly replied hay- very ingenuously committed the dele gates to hay that it was a very cordial reception He was in hearty Kyni- pathy with the AngloAmerican feel ing and could scarce refrain from ro tating to emblem of the empire upon which the sun never sots as well as that country over which Moats the Star spangled banner I to v A Dunlop of Columbus Ohio responded for tho States Ho was to find such a genial t- and as flags to which so much reference was were folded peacefully together he hoped would never when they will ho less peaceful towards each other Ho hoped that Conference would as distinct Christian in spirit as name Throw the Line was the title of the solo sung by Rev V Strick land of Argos- Indiana Greetings from York Co T was then read by Elder Chid- ley and the Secretary instructed to forward a suitable reply Rev L of Iowa re sponded to the address of welcome on behalf of the Western States in an eloquent manner He was British soil and among British subjects but ho was proud of the West Curio ly ambition and sense of duty were three impelling forces in mans make up and these were aptly applied Ho hoped that the Conference may be noted for zeal and- piety Session cloned at oclock by Dr Holmes of Chelsea Mich pronounc ing the benediction The devotionol services on Wednes day morning were inspiring and tho sermon by Rev W J Daniels of Ohio on The supremacy of Christ in His Kingdom and the unity of chris tians was edifying and strengthen ing to believers credentials of delegates were reported and business discussion occupied the rest of the forenoon WEDNESDAY The Presidents Report was received with much gratification It was ex ceedingly satisfactory so far as the operations of the quadrennial were concerned A few changes were re commended in the Constitution and the report referred to various Com mittees to report thereon to Confer ence Motions and business resolutions the remainder of the session WKONKSDAY Union was read by Rev Dr Weston of Now York introduction of the report goes on to emphasize the spirit of christian union and the necessity of adopting a name that will not impede its progress The bases of union must be consistent with broad fellowship in Christ and everything to the chris tian character The Christian Church has not been forward in seeking union but it stands ready to take the hand of any denomination in a genuine christian spirit Reference is then made to the approach of the at the Ohio and Syracuse Conventions as well as at in Aug 1897 and tho Committee re- commend Union on the following basis Mutual acceptances of ministers of both denominations one name the organizations and institutions of either denomination not to ho disturbed and general cooperation in definite and aggressive christian work By permission a minority report was presented by Mr Mason of New Jersey who was also a member of the Committee on Church Union He prefaced the by saying that the Christian Church has given away more members than wo have received by co operation There is not unanimity as to the wisdom of our action at the Congregationalism have withdrawn their propositions and the action proposed is likely to increase instead of diminish the number of sects therefore the report recommends That the Committee on Church Union 2nd That where as much time was consumed in discus sing the union with the Baptist it the new Bedford Convention also at the Marion Convention with the Free Baptist and Christian Union denom inations and also at the Haverhill Convention with the Congregationalisms Resolved that hereafter we devote our energies to our legitimate christian ac tivities and the development of our enterprises waiting patiently for the time when all followers of Christ ac cept his name his pastor of the Christian Church New market surpassed himself in his cor dial address of welcome to this town He esteemed it an honored privilege to extend a welcome to this Interna tional Convention although the pre paration carried with it much anxiety and much responsibility Not simply Christian Church but the christian denominations of town gave as warm welcome as our own There are among you men and women we have longed to meet and longed to men and women signally used of Cod in loading many to a better life Wo welcome you because of the principles that bind us in fel lowship which we cherish and intend to publish and proclaim and also be cause what you have done for us The planting of the Christian Church on Canadian soil land as fertile as your own in this very community is due to your exertions When Elder David Miller was preaching in Green ville NX ill Mrs Mary dile was converted She came to Canada yes to Newmarket accom panied by her husband and while in a strange land and surrounded by strange people she wrote again and again amid prayer moistened by her tears beseeching some one to come and preach the principles of the chris tian denomination At length a stranger appeared at the door in the person of Allan Huntley and just at that time there was visiting at the same place Bro Darius of Kes wick miles north of Newmarket He invited Huntley to preach there and on the of October 1821 there were persons baptized by im mersion in Lake and the first church of the denomination in Canada was opened at Keswick and continues to a power for good This is men tioned to show that you meet on his toric ground and it recalls sacred memories You have always been our and the international fellowship and goodwill so noticeable he hoped would grow closer and clos er The people who dwell the red and blue and the stars IMS Said that words failed him to do justice to the occasion but in extend ing a welcome to this convention on behalf of the town he was only voic ing the sentiment of every citizen Many delegates he was aware had come to Canada for the first time and he hoped that the impression they received would a good one It is honor to entertain you From the narrow and crooked streets of the town it is quite evident to you that it is an old settled place and quite un like newer towns of present age Newmarket was settled nearly a century ago and this gave rise to its name Previous to that all people from the north went to Toronto to trade but in a couple of stores and a grist mill located here and thus a new market was formed This is the centre of an agricultural district and our market is a surprise to every body Newmarket was incorporated as a town in and is an enterpris ing as any place of its size in Canada Our educational facilities waterworks electric light plant Town Hall and Market steel bridges etc are im provements wo point to with pride We hope you will make yourselves at home while you are amongst us A voice What about prohibition Mr Cane I did all I could for- it Newmarket gave a majority of in its favor and every in the Dominion gave it a substantial major ity except Quebec Rev I of New Bedford Mass responded to the address of welcome on behalf of the Eastern States He began by saying Fellow citizens of North America I am from old Puritanic Conservative New Eng land and while I cordially endorse all that has been said about our re lationship I want to feel that we are here to do business for Cod and eternity Go where you will you will find that New England has lecn a most excellent help throughout the entire country I have been honored with three terms of the Presidency of this convention and I trust that this will bo the most interesting and profitable of any ever enjoyed On behalf of the delegates from the east he thanked the people for their cordial welcome Rev Dr of Suffolk Pres ident of Elon College responded for south representing onefifth of the territory and one sixth of the population of the United States He gave a glowing description of the in crease in mercantile agricultural and milling industries since the civil war and while onethird of the population is colow there is this ho had to say of them they were intensely religous The political and social conditions are much better than the secular papers would lead people to believe Recent events have brought the English speaking people closer together and they are the missionary people of the world The south accepts gratefully welcome of Canada Church packed to the doors The choir assisted by Rev led in a delightful song service After scripture lesson and prayer Rev Dr T of Frank- land Ohio gave the address of the evening on The Christian Move ment Every denomination should have a reason for its existence he said or cease its life What is our mission Nothing will come before this con vention of greater importance and we should give no uncertain sound The ultimate end of all our work is a per fect man made so by Gods spirit but this has been greatly hindered by selflove and consequent creeds Some have said that the Christian Church is only another sect but it has no hu man creed no dogmatic theology only the bible We shall regard every fol lower of Christ in a christian spirit and not in the light of theology We have in our hands the hammer God that can crumble all the foundations of creed We have no mission but the bringing of men to the Christlife and His love as the only ground of fellowship Our distinctive mission is the union of separated worshippers which is not our own making for three times our Lord prayed that His disciples might be one Let us hush wrangling and theology and proclaim the only Jesus that can save the world The marvellous progress of the Christ ian Church at its formation was cited but lack of organization impeded it Our pioneers opposed education but we all now see clearly that the heart must be full of the love of God and the head full of knowledge they also insisted that men should preach with out salary but we have learned that sacrifice is the law of God and the Church that does most of it the one that is most successful Let us or ganize more and see that each minis ter has a church and each church a preacher We have allowed ministers already ordained to ruse tobacco by the largest stretch of charity to re main but hereafter those who do so cannot enter Wo never had so many colleges and a brighter outlook and it only needs concerted action to move forward The President then made ail appeal to the congregation to help pay the expenses of entertaining delegates who could not be provided with free homes by the Billeting Committee Eld Chidley explained that pro vision had Ijcen made for which was considered an outside number to be in attendance hut over had come down upon the town like a shower of rice A collection of 8223 was then taken up At the clos of meet ing this was increased to A discussion on union with other de nominations in which some feared that the Christians might loose their identity created much excitement and will have considerable bearing in the action of the Conference thereto as well as the election of oflieers After a selection by a Male Quartette of Americans the re port of the on Church Convention opened at After devotional exercises routine work was proceeded with By request
