submerged lands known as the Holland Marsh These lands lie in part in three townships East and West and King For years cast there has been more or less discussion of looking to the reclamation of this area or part of it and mak ing the same available for producing something more valuable than bog At first the scheme was to lower Lake Simcoe by increasing the overflow at the northern end of the lake but against this and oth er lake towns entered an emphatic and successful protest- Latterly the reclamation proposal has taken the form of plans for pumping out the marsh after the method adopted in the south- western Peninsula the Province- It was to discuss this lat ter project that a meeting was held in Bradford on Friday with Prof Day of the as speaker of the day Prof Day began by considering the question of feasibility This question there was no difficulty in arvrwering in the affirmative Forty per cent of Holland Prof Day said is below sea level and has been reclaimed by methods that can be applied to the Holland Marsh The fertility of this reclaimed soil in Holland is indicated by the fact that it is valued at to per acre and maintains a population of to the square mile Feasibility is proven again by the fact that in Lousisiana thirty com panies are at present engaged in re claiming nine and onehalf million acres of like land The practicability of such enter prises has been shown even to our own Province by works carried cut in Kent Essex and Island by building artificial embankments and forcing the water over them pump ing thus leaving the land protected by the embankment dry enough for the production of crops As to the cost In Southwestern Ontario the acres reclaimed by this means has varied from two to eight thousand acres and the first cost of the work from to per acre with an annual charge for mainten ance of the plant of to per acre In Louisiana the acres reclaim ed have caried from to acres and the first cost of the work from to per acre with annual cost of maintenance and air to pumping plant running from to per acre into details in regard to the work done in Ontario Prof Day said that in Tilbury east 7800 acres were reclaimed in this way at a first cost of slightly less than per acre while the annual cost for pump ing and repair of plant for twenty years represents per acre As a result of the work land previously valueless has been made worth to SCO per acre In Island acres were re claimed at a first cost of per acre and an annual cost of per acre for maintenance of plant In Tilbury acres were at a cost for dikes and pumping plant of The annual cost of operation represents a charge of per acre In the case of the Holland River USE BAKING POWDER AND NEVER FAIL BUTTERIOK FASHION BOOK With Patterns We are offering Special
