Newmarket Guests were present from Windsor Es sex Perth Brighton Kingston and Toronto For this week we turn from our panel of Aurora merchants to talk for a white about a well- known and h h yrcspected OldTimer in the person of Archie Murray One year ago we had the plea sure of attending the reception given by Mr and Mrs Murray on the great occasion of their golden wedding anniversary when over guests signed the Golden Book It was a wonder ful evening A year was to pass ere we again had the pleasure of meeting this couple whom time has touched so lightly On June 12 Archie Mur ray and Delia May Defoe were married But we can assure their many friends in Aurora and in several neighboring townships that Mr and Mrs Murray arc in the best of health and enjoy ing life to the full While we write this they are at their country cottage at Belmont Lake where they will stay for the summer Early History Mr Murray does not in the least mind the fact being known that he is years of age though he looks many years younger than the record He was born in King township His ancestry is Scottish his forebears hail ing from Argyllshire He was one of a family of four boys and was raised on a farm He came to Aurora in 1907 when he bought the grocer busi ness now owned by Mr Frank Tcasdale When we asked Mr Murray if he could tell us the original owner of the Tcasdale store he replied that he couldnt be sure He described it as a very old store certainly one of Auroras oldest He was at the Wellington St store until when he took over the Old Brown Farm on the 2nd Concession lot 10 Later he bought a grocer business on Parliament St Toronto and re mained there for about three years Then he became a groc ery salesman and put in another three years in that capacity Return to Aurora However the call of Aurora was too strong for him to resist and in he returned here In he bought the Queens hotel For those who arc inter ested in local history we would point out that the Queens hotel was built in the year Until May Aurora was Vet when liquor was freely sold But under the Local Op tion act a vote of the citizens decided that Aurora must go dry and it has remained so ever since In any event it did not matter much which way it went since in Mr Murrays opinion Aurora has always been a well-conduct- town thanks to its good citi zens Member of Council Always interested in town matters Mr Murray was a mem ber of council for several years He was Reeve during the Mayor alty of the late J Walton and again when the late P Thompson was Mayor A Depu tyReeve during those years was Cliff Case Mr Murray pointed out that members of council of his time still happily living are Charles and Bert the latter at one time a Deputy- Reeve It was with feelings of great regard that Mr Murray refer red to the late Mayors under whom he served J Walton and P Thompson Retrospect Looking back over the years Mr Murray said that he could think of only four businesses in Aurora that had not changed during his recollection These were the Willis a and Scanlon businesses With these exceptions he be lieved changes of ownership had taken place with all others Mr Murray said he en joyed his years of ownership of the Queens hotel where he had made many friends In retire ment now the hotel is in the management of his son The numerous friends of Mr and Mrs Archie Murray wilt take great pleasure in the know ledge that both are in the very best of health AURORA NEWS PAGE adds the wish that this good fortune may long continue with them is easy on your purse BACKACHE is HoMinffeifeck its meet ing on June by a native of Aurora Miss Mary Bowman Miss Bowman who holds an important position- on the staff of the United Nations painted out that everyone appears to be well informed on what the Uni ted Nations has failed to do but knows very little of its successes Those successes are wry Veal and may well have halted the spread of war Mr Hess told us he very much enjoyed the address which was full of information and of im portant facts that do not get into the newspapers When Aurora Went Dry Additional to the pleasure we experience in writing up our local merchants and other per sonalities these histories are also educational since they cover the changes that have taken place in Aurora through the years For example how many citi zens could have given the date when Aurora went dry This something we have often won dered about ourselves question was settled by Mr Archie Murray who was able to give us the month and year when under Local Option the citizens decided to quit the rule of the wets That was in May A vote today wc believe would confirm what was settled years ago Park Cleanup The incredible has happened The kneehigh weeds and grass in the park to Which we referred last week have at last been cut down and the two years growth now lies in a mass of heaps Wc hope these will be raked tip and burnt at tin early date Progress has however been made At
