world competition Provisional directors were named to repre sent England Scotland Wales Eire Holland Sweden and Can ada Invitations to join the or ganization will be sent to other nations As official representative of the Ontario Plowmens Assoc iation I was named to speak for Canada on the committee to draft standards and rules Thougn we came away from the meeting without any set agreements I felt that a lot of common ground had been found the six hours discussion though that considerable skill is required to get these two plows adjusted to precisely the same The Story Of SHARON By ETHEL TREWHBLLA This is the thirtysixth instalment of a continuing Story of Sharon from its founding to the present The story was written after almost two years of research and will we believe be a major contribution to know ledge of the The remaining instalments will follow weekly The Newmarket Era and Express Thursday Feb Page Murder in District In reminiscence Dr re called that as a child his plowing of our own boys demonstrated once was charged with in Much remains to be done to reach agreement on a standard plow and a lot more discussion will be needed before a set pat tern of judging is found Though the organization Is still in its infancy a lot has al ready been accomplished and I am sure the great desire for an international competition evident again there will have to be con siderable give and take to reach common ground for an equitable international competition- It has been a source pleas ure to us to find an increasing interest in plowing matches wherever we have been In Britain there are now active plowmens associations and as at home the officers are among the best farmers in the community The Cornish countryside is dif ferent from anything we had seen before The coast is rather bleak because of the high winds off the Atlantic Even inland the trees are all shantyroofed being trimmed on the west by wind and salty vapour In near by valleys and further inland we found luxuriant plants of a semi- tropical nature palms rhodod endrons azalea camellia and the broadleafed trees the murder- of his neighbor John Johnson of East Dr Pearson was called and the testimony of the daughter and several neighbors was taken Jealousy and resentment at re marks attributed to the murder ed man were revealed as the mo tive The accused was but years of age but the evidence at the trial convicted him The whole case was painful and cre ated very mixed feelings in Sha ron where lived a sister of the murderer In potato bugs arrived in Sharon A onetime resident of Sharon whose earlier years had been lived in Pickering recalled that on a certain Sunday morn ing he with his brother had driven the cows to Lake Ontario for water As they gazed oyer the lake their attention became focused on a dark mass which appeared to come nearer with each wave They waited and along the upper lighter atmo sphere to finally settle like a blanket over most of southern Ontario i A road Known earliest years as the road extend ed west from Queen street along the northern line of the Barker farm and opened a shorter and more direct route to the flour mill situated on the east bank of the Holland River This mill was built prior to the Rebellion of by Israel Lundy and was later en larged and improved by his son In for the first time this well remembered landmark passed into changed ownership Peter Kitto had purchased the property In March it was destroy ed by fire Nothing of the old mill now remains except a few bolts and the wheel pit A piece of the ancient dam still is to be seen and the house now occu pied by Mr Fred Williams and his family is the original house The mill pond has disap peared and the ancient road was closed at about the time the canal was put through from Newmarket Statisticians reporting that sport fishing is big business in Canada estimate it is worth S80- annually Something important you should know about your husband know him bettor efforts at the West of England Plowing match at in Cornwall My two companions Canadas champion plowmen Eugene of and Norman of Richmond Hill more than up held the honor of Canadian plowing As you already know Eugene placed first in his class hut dont think told you that Norman was awarded fourth place in competition against nine English champions Ho plowed a pood hand which on workmanship should have given him third not second place However the judges felt that the type of furrow did not permit to place him any higher The work of both boys was much admired for its uni formity and straight ness and overheard several farmers com menting on the fact that our plowing seems more practicable Although the fierce Atlantic gates had been pounding the Cornish coast less than hours before the weather at the time of the match was like an early May day at home Apart from a damp on top soil conditions were Ideal More than were present about the attendance we would expect at a large county match in Ont ario Wo had never seen more at tractive plowing than that done by these experts with narrow ex hibition type plows The turn- wrest typo was of particular in terest I bo boys There are two plows in each unit and when the end of a furrow is reached the team is turned hack the other horse takes the furrow and the opposite plow is let down This means no crown as we know If and no finish It was obvious winding roads which seem to fol low early livestock trails AH fields are fenced by five to seven foot walls of stone and sod first built perhaps five centuries ago The weather He was a perfect example of the intense spirit of national ism that pervades Wales al though It has been a part of the British Isles for years CONQUERED The story goes while Mr Williams was in the army he took a conducted tour of Rome For a time ho listened to the guide wax eloquent on the suc cessful Roman invasion of Brit ain Finally he could stand it no longer Ho interrupted the monologue and said Look here old chap youre looking at one representing a group that was not conquered He have added by the Romans or any one else The Welsh take great pride that they never surrendered to the Romans but maintained guer rilla strongholds in the hills When in the century Ed ward I built hilltop castles to subjugate the Welsh even he was unable to conquer the regions- With all this nationalist feel ing there seems bo no sub stantial movement for homo rule though there is a Welsh Council and a Minister for Welsh Affairs In the House of Com mons Perhaps the altitude of the Welsh is best demonstrated by their insistence that the Cel tic tongue be taught in the lower school grades English is the official language but Welsh Is commonly spoken in the homes We decided pick a farm at random rather than take a guid ed tour of Welsh agriculture and so after a short drive we turned in to what appeared a homesteading While a farmhand was seeking the far mer a young woman dressed in blocks came strolling down the lane She proved to mis tress of the farm and active manager during the absence of her husband John an army officer HILL FARMING SCHEME Mrs told us they had taken over the farm in It was vacant then and most of the land had been unused for years or more It Is worked under the government- backed hill farming scheme Under this plan approved farms eligible for subsidies up to per cent for such improve ments as bracken breaking road construction laying of water mains fertilization and better grass seeding The Barstow holdings are bout acres some head cattle ewes some pigs and poultry Hereford cat tle had boon tried but it was found the soil was not sufficient ly productive for them so the changed to the hardy Welsh Black breed which is pro ducing while living off the sparse pasture of the high Welsh hills The native Welsh sheep are also favored for bracken grazing While they are small and the wool clip might be as light as two pounds they are capable of producing meat ported a wonderful lime and for days the main topic discussed was the wild beast show When they became aged men and women they still recalled that occasion In a Grange was opened in Sharon with the following of ficers A J Hughes master John Salter overseer Haines lecturer steward A stew ard Stephen Howard chaplain C sec D The lady officers were Mrs Mrs Mrs A Hughes and Miss Johanna This was known as Sharon Grange No and it began with a membership of A tremendous flood occurred in 1878 mainly on the Holland River and washed out bridges and culverts Fifty years after the strange phenomenon of falling stars people of Sharon were to wit ness another mysterious caprice of nature On September a day which had been clear and sunny until noon began to dar ken and by midafternoon was turned into the darkness of night Chickens went to roost cattle came from the pasture bawling school was dismissed and the children sent home while terror gripped the hearts of many inhabitants News even at that time did not travel quickly and it was some days before an explana tion was received A disastrous fire had occurred in Michigan in which were lost The smoke from this holocaust had travelled and wool at altitudes where the Down breeds could not exist Mrs commandeered the farm Jeep and took us for a tour of the hills Eugene and Norman sat in the back with three dogs one of which persist In wagging its muddy tail against my ears We took a trail which had been gravelled and slated under the Improvement scheme and within minutes we had ascended feet At the top there was snow and Ice but a magnificent view of the surrounding valleys When we returned Mrs suddenly said there Isnt that annoying and pointed to some half a dozen wild ponies which had Joined domestic ones kept for children The farm was of the familiar European pattern with house and stables all adjoining the courtyard or as wo would say farmyard in the centre Our hostess told us It was built on the site of Castle erected in The oak timber ed Interior was a delightful ox- ample of period It had a ninefoot open fireplace with a wldo lodge which dogs Im mediately occupied From Wales we travelled to Wolverhampton by car where the boys saw their first rugger match Then a short car tour of the Lake District and on to Workington for the internation al conference Wo left there Inst night
