known for the many groups actively engaged in putting on plays so there should be a lively interest In the out come of the school play in the festival A short note on the origin of the festivals They were started from an idea of Ken Watts the clover and energetic promoter of Simpsons teenage activities He to link teenage groups together in play festivals so that youth could become actively In terested In dramatics not only to awaken a liking for playact ing hut also to arouse keen zest for lively and group participation- He started a tentative experiment of such a festival in at his own Init iative and expense It such marked favor that he pealed another festival lowing year In the same way By this time the project had really awakened public Interest and the young people began to look forward to taking part In future competitions From these results Ken showed Simpsons that their sponsorship of his pro ject would be of great benefit to the public They willingly agreed and annually award their trophy and cash prizes for the winning play host actor and actress and host play direction Ken has in mind more Ontario high schools competing in forth coming festivals with possible interprovincial competitions in the future Mr Harold Garrett acting principal at the Newmarket High school told Ken that the school arranges an open house once or twice a year featuring student plays
