costly un dertaking he said Reeve Cook suggested that a petition for a storm sewer be prepared immediately so that work could go ahead and that a new petition for sanitary sewers be circulated for a larger area taking in more than the Hill- view residents Mr Cook said the whole picture might as well be taken into a sanitary sewer system Mayor Crawford Rose warned that if Kenedy St were taken into the system its sewers would have to be deepened The mayor said that if a trunk sewer were to be built he didnt know whe ther the residents would want to wait for their sanitary sewers unil it was completed Council approved of Deputy- Reeve Murray at least going ahead on engineering plans for the storm sewer part of the project Fire Department Councillor Victor Jones re quested council to approve of a for the present time at least in I 798 expenditure for new equip- view of the present day cost of material and labor as it was learned that a suitable pool would cost 85000 We have learned that the material necessary for a wading pool of by would cost approximately and if dressing rooms and other facili ties were not required to be built we are of the opinion that such a pool could be constructed for about complete We would also like to point out that the arena facilities would only be required by the wading pool during the season when they are not needed or used by the arena said Mr Case Mr Case and his committee should be complimented said Reeve A A Cooke I for one would be happy to leave it in their hands It will be an ideal spot said the With the extra work thats lot and behind the clerks offices property owners for new sew ers Although the petition ask ed for sanitary sewers Deputy- Reeve Murray said that what the residents probably had in mind was a storm sewer to take off water The propertyowners delega tion said that the people wanted both sanitary and storm sewers Storm sewers would have to be kept separate from sanitary Make It A Habit Meet Your THE EIGHTH DAY OF MAY NINETEEN HUNDRED AND FIFTYTWO KNOCKING THE TOWN There is a new game being played by some people in Aurora at the present time who dont like their public work adversely discussed Their game is to de scribe their critics as knockers Honest criticism they dismiss as knocking the town The game is getting very boring and we suggest that those who feel themselves unfairly should resort to by way of rejoinder rather than an appeal to sentiment of a juvenile character Fortunately there are knockers who do not fear to speak their minds and who far from injuring their town are helping to improve it They are drawing attention to defects here and there and thus providing opportunities for their correction Why should such men some of whom are nativeborn and substantial tax payers be improperly accused of knocking their town What a town has most to fear in its public men is not a tendency to criticize but to become complacent Complacency encourages a neglect of obvious needs and there the knocker performs a most useful service He raps oh the door of indifference to rouse the sleep ers behind it BOOSTING THE TOWN Then there are the town boosters Aurora they say is ripe for a burstingatt heseams with a new population and new industries Last year the Board of Trade bought a page of the Banner for and per suaded the town council to do the same for a great special supplement issue of the hometown paper to put Aurora on the map People who bought the a found other free copies in their mail while all around the neighborhood special supplements fluttered down into harmless house holds with the ease of falling in the back yard Then the citizens learned that far from Aurora the assessor and the census takers had found that the population was less than the figures shown on town documents Now the boosters are at it again The Board of Trade is having pep literature printed at an ap proximate cost of of which the taxpayers will pay half by consent of the council And even while this yeasty work is going on it is admitted that one worth while industry wanting to locate in Aurora cannot do so because the town hasnt got enough water No water no industries Then why waste the tax payers money MURRAY ANSWERS HIS CRITICS In view of the publicity given by the Aurora Banner to criticisms of Councillor Jim Murray it would have been grossly unfair to hint had there been no press report of what took place at the Recreation commission meet ing on Thursday evening May when he took the first opportunity of repudiating the charges appearing in the other paper The Aurora Banner had battened to the fullest possible extent on material which it described in large- type headline as Unwarranted Criticism and this had come by processes of twisting and distortion to suggest that Mr Murray had made personal criticisms of the Arena manager which he has at no time done The sordid processes eventually implicated as was no doubt intended Aurora News Page and one mem ber of the commission innocently fell into the trap Without having read our paper as he admitted he re buked us at the meeting concerned by expressing his disappointment that we had not refuted the unwarran ted and unnecessary criticisms As Mr Murray said on our behalf we could hardly be expected to refute what we hadnt published l Air Murray attended the Recreation commission meeting where the criticisms were levelled against him but he had advised his colleagues that he had to leave early and the charges were made in his absence and he was aware of them only when he read them in the Banner Ho is the last man to accept unfounded criti cisms and he demolished them with a and completeness that allowed of no compromise When his crossexaminations were over there was literally nothing left of the charges The unhappy incident provides one more proof of what we have asserted from time to time That Banner reports and opinions should be perused with extreme caution if readers would guard against distortion and misrepresentation GOOD REPORTS WHAT THEY ABE SAYING The regular weekly fea ture What They Are Saying is omitted from Aurora News Page this week owing to the editors unavoidable for the managers abil ity and competence had never been questioned by him at the council meeting where the work of the Arena board was under discussion All that he had mentioned was the question of the allocution of the managers time between the rink and the recreation commission ami whether such time was being used to the best advantage Such questions said Mr Mur ray he had a right to ask as a member of council and the Arena board There was a great difference between discussing how the arena managers time should be used and that of questioning his confirmed that there had been no criticism of the Arena manager Mr Murray then went on to say that he doubted if the Recrea tion commission was in order Jn bringing up for discussion Arena matters that had been discussed at a council meeting He ex pressed the view that the Recre ation commission had taken up a matter did not strictly con cern it the result of which was a vote of confidence that was never necessary in the first place and reflected on himself Questions Banner Reports Holding in his hand a copy of the Banner where the reports appeared Mr Murray proceeded to question each statement at tributed to the various speakers at
