charge ex cept for their travelling ex penses In view of this generosity the ladies of the Aid decided to serve the visitors their supper in one of the class rooms of Trin ity United church which also sauce jellies homemade rolls and butter bread apple pie and ice cream cakes dark and light and tea As if the production of such a meal were not a big enough un dertaking these indefatigable women the Auxiliary have cards made with the standard sizes of the different articles of linen print ed on them these cards to be given to the different societies or persons interested in helping the hospital a motion to this effect was made and carried In Mr Walter Eves article The History of York County Hospital he notes that the year was a very trying one in the history of the of the impossibility of extending the hospital situated as it was in Dr Dales home on Main Street the Hospital Board had appointed a committee the previous year to see if a more suitable property could be found The beautifully situated Cane property with its large grounds had finally been select ed and by spring of it had been decided to issue bonds to promote the purchase of this property Unfortunately difficulty was encountered in finding subscrib ers and on June we note that the President Mrs Mc Lennan called a meeting of the executive of the Womens Aux iliary at her home at pm Mr J Harvey president of the Hospital Board addressed the executive in regard to the hos pital bonds which are on the market soliciting the help of the Auxiliary in suggesting likely purchasers to members of the Board Even with the ladies helping the prospects of financing the project were so poor that accord ing to Mr Eves account the Board voted to close the hospi tal on August and store the equipment This action appar ently was what was needed to spur the community to greater efforts and we find that by the end of July it was reported that new efforts on behalf of the sale of bonds and subscriptions were proving effective and that it is believed the money required would be raised It would appear however that the Indies of the Aid were never really in doubt about the outcome because at a meeting held at the end of June it was September 1940 meeting the ladies took stock of themselves They were now a going concern having raised the money for and distributed throughout the hospital much- needed equipment of all types to the value of many hundreds of dollars so that the need of a constitution and bylaws for the Auxiliary were discussed and it was moved that Mrs Norma Mrs Jessie and Miss Olive act as a committee to draw up bylaws and present same at the next meeting The meeting day was also changed to the first Tuesday of each month The constitution was adopted and a very ade quate one it was and the ladies were legally in business It is interesting to note with regard to this years house to house canvass the canvassers all spoke of the kindly manner in which they were received At this same meeting it was moved that this Aid join the Onario United Hospital Aids As sociation the fee is only per year Mrs McLennan the president in presenting her an nua report in November spoke of the trying conditions under which the Womens Auxiliary carried on through the past year owing to the uncertainty as to whether the hospital work was to be continued in New market or not However a brighter day is dawning The Hospital Board has purchased a beautiful pro perty now undergoing altera tions and rebuilding will make when completed a hospital for which we will be proud before them the Aid opened the new year in a great flurry of social activities teas showers anything from blankets to face cloths was ac ceptable chain bridges dram atic presentations two theatre
