WHAT THEY ARE SAYING Vacation Mood Grips Aurora dose Soma Factories Stores Albert tennis Club Wins A holiday spirit prevails in the hometown at the present time Two of the major industries leather and Harts are closed down for vacation periods and that goes also for some of the merchants People are either just going away or just coming back Aurora News Page COUNCIL REPORT J G SINCLAIR Editor OFFICE HALL AURORA TELEPHONE PAGE ELEVEN THURSDAY THE SEVENTH DAY OF AUGUST NINETEEN HUNDRED AND FIFTYTWO t One of these days we too propose to take a holiday Not perhaps a holiday but a break Theres a considerable differ ence The latter is much briefer than a holiday of say a coiiple weeks We have not had that much straight holiday in years So one week soon therell be no What They Are Saying For we cannot report what they are saying if we are not around to hear it In stead we may hope to have a report of the Malcolm council proceedings after it has emerged from its deliberations in a com mittee of the whole into which it dissolved itself as long ago as November of last year when Reeve lambasted it The unfortunate position with us is that cannot close down If we did there would be no Aurora News Page as we have no deputy It has been suggested to us that we might request members of the council the arena board to write columns for us The sug gestion has its attractions Un fortunately however there are what appear to be insurmount able obstacles associated with the suggestion obstacles that are so obvious that we need hardly name them An Alternative We could of course close down Aurora News Page for a We could go out of action completely and become utterly dumb through nonexistence We could vanish from the new- stands leaving our representa tives holding the bag with no Aurora News Page this week Now we have no doubt at all in our mind that such a vacuum would give the most exhilarat ing satisfaction to a few people in Aurora Some of hem would doubtless have an extra one to celebrate a nonexistent Aurora News Page Another and an other one to drown the memory of it to paraphrase the lines of old Omar To close down would be mighty unfair to our many loyal readers and supporters After all many have paid a years and a two years subscription the confident belief that they would receive copies of the paper per annum Why should we go back on our undertaking and chisel them out of a weeks is sue v The Only Local Paper Incidentally ours is the only newspaper representing Aurora during the current week The hometown paper like old Tom Bowling has taken a rest We were wondering why the Aurora air was less heavy and humid this week Citizens who were not on holiday appeared to have an unusually relaxed ap pearance as though some weigh ty burden or tantalizing problem had unexpectedly been disposed of Suddenly we remembered that the Banner had temporarily we understand folded up The drums and the big trombone had become silent and an atmosphere of serenity had fallen lovingly on Ihe old town One Was breathing more easily in a clear er and more rarefied air A lot of troublesome static had gone with the closing down of the Banner We shall keep faith our readers Though may our selves take a break we shall keep faith our Aurora News Page like the un failing mail will come through Tennis Club The Aurora Tennis club had visitors from Mount Albert on when events of this kind are scheduled at the home town The club which is experienc ing an unusually successful year for new members has arranged an interesting series of mens doubles for hometown mem bers The first of these contests took place on Thursday night July 31 when Leo Potter skip and Bill beat Dr Madge skip and Russell Sinclair with ends being- played Every end was keenly contest ed and some brilliant bowling was in evidence Information Please Newmarket Cubs would be very glad to receive any infor mation concerning the activities of Aurora Cubs In conversa tion with CubMaster Lome of Newmarket he was tell ing us of the very active Cub organization at Newmarket which has a membership of over Lomes group numbers 36 So far we understand Aurora has not registered its Cub organ ization spoiled this annual Aurora attraction though it did not prevent its taking place Around oclock a thun derstorm accompanied by a tor rential downpour which lasted for about half an hour seemed likely to bring cancellation al together something which the Lions treasurer Mr Charles Copland tells us has so far not yet happened to the carnival Fortunately the weather clear ed but the threatening skies reduced the number of visitors as compared with last year The TV set was won by an employee at the Holland Landing tannery the bicycle by Mrs A Cousins Aurora and the money doll prize was won by P Osbor no son of the wellknown Rev K have heard several opin ions expressed urging that ah ef fort should be made to induce the rector of Trinity Anglican church to submit himself for public office The Row- What- made a most favorable impression oh the minds of large numbers of Aurora citi zens during the recent Outlets campaign His broadminded ap proach to the subject together with his know hie affairs and would give force and understanding to any public of fice hope Mr may be persuaded to stand for some public office and share the views expressed that as a mem ber of the public school board ho would be the right man in the right place Another Floe Movie The manager of the theatre Mr Clifford Griffiths is bringing another fine movie to Aurora commencing Monday Aug will be at the thea tre for four days Its title is With A Song In My Heart It combines drama and com edy and is in large port the story of events in the life of the popular singer Jane Miss did a great deal of entertaining for the troops overscan and was in air crashes With A Song In My Heart there is on allstar cast The movie includes the popular Miss Susan Hay ward who starred in David and and the memorable Climb High est Mountain Times of showing are given in the theatre advertisements which appear in an adjoining EDITORIALS SOME COMPARISONS A comparison between the Recreation Commission and the Arena Board in their methods of conducting business is interesting The one outstanding difference is that the Recreation Commission conducts its business in public while the Arena Board conducts its business behind closed By inviting and encouraging the press to attend its meetings the Recreation Commission has not only gained for itself a great amount of free publicity and made its good works known to the public but this openhanded way of conducting its affairs has inspired public confidence By its neglect of the- press and its secret methods of conducting its affairs the Arena Board has created a situation which has brought on itself widespread criticism and Jack of confidence The members of both are appointed council which in turn is appointed by the electors and taxpayers Members of council are responsible to the people and members of the Recreation Commis sion and the Arena Board are responsible to the people through council Both organizations like the chief executive body itself function through the use of public money At no time in its history has the Recreation Com mission found it necessary to ask council for a vote of confidence Its meetings and its financial transac- have been open for detailed reporting The very opposite been the case with the Arena Board The financial statements of the Recreation Commission have been dated and signed those issued by the Arena Board have been neither dated nor sighed and are therefore not legally valid the present mess and muddle of arena affairs pro vide a striking contrast when compared with the efficiency of the Recreation Commission ON MURRAY Councillor Jim Murrays letter to the electors and taxpayers of Aurora which we published last week is likely to bring creases to the stuffedshirt pose of old members of the Arena Board It would be better if its qualities produced a laxative effect on an organization so obviously affected by stubborn selfimportance and selfsufficiency The Board and the Banner Auroras IlusliIiusli have recently ganged up on Councillor Murray aided by some members of council whom one would have surmised would know better Their efforts appear to be directed to the job of closing his noisy trap a happy figure of speech applied to our self by a former member of council whom events have relegated to the shadows The phrase was applied to us at the time old changed hands Over the grapevine it is said that we are giving too much publicity to Councillor Murray Our answer to such a charge is that we will give equal space to any public representative who sets out to do as good a job as Mr Murray is doing at present to bring important information to the notice of the taxpayers As we have pointed out if matters were to be left in the hands of chairman Underbill judging from past records the taxpayers would have no infor mation oil the arena Mr Murray is determined to change such an unsatisfactory state of affairs and in his endeavor to do so are confident ho has the full support of the taxpayers His task is not an easy are fully aware of that And being aware of it this will back his efforts in every way possible Like his our duty is to the public not to a few special interests THE BOULEVARDS The suggestion for the remarks that follow was made to its by a wellknown citizen who has contributed to A roras lax revenue le was tell us about a small hole in his boulevard which has needed attention for a long time His efforts to have it attended to have so far hot been successful If the town had to employ labor he said hi looking after all the boulevards it would prove a very cosily business As it is majority of tomeowner take a pride in the appearance of their boulevards this labor costs the nothing It seeing a that a I title job is asked for that one meets nothing but discouragement Both wove good points Au rbm is most tirlu hate in having jot of boulevards and also in the fact they are well en for by workers who take pride in ttiejayout their rsidynisi All the town you can see those open spaces with their trim turf that ftdd to the f the situation if took the altitude that the bottle- and waited tor the attention of municipal employees with lawn No one con walk around of Aurora with out being by its residential It is hot a truly lovely town Its wide streets hhd its for boulevards all help to make it so lis curly builders and planners were quite obviously men of good sense and judgment And we yet to learn that these builders and planners were members of a planning board f Swindle Writes The Editor Aurora News Page The arena controversy has de veloped some rather startling angles and might be well at this time to observe some per tinent facts that have a definite bearing on the arena situation The councils representatives on the arena cpnimission from the the commission was es tablished In early June to the end of were Deputy- Reeve Murray and Coun cillor C Corbett There was no indication in press reports of council meetings during that period of any offi cial report of arena affairs ever having been tabled by either or both of these representatives nor was there any indication of any request from the mayor or any member of council for such a report At the end of these two representatives quietly with drew and Mayor Alex Bell and Councillor Gundy were appointed by council to replace them At the time of my resignation the commission I was the only member except the execu tive who was attending the meetings This situation considered as hopeless and resigned for two reasons because of circum stances which I was helpless to control I was unable to func tion as a member should I had hoped by my resignation to provide the council with an op portunity to rectify the situation and bring to their attention the unsatisfactory state of affairs But the council pussyfooted around the problem by reap pointing tho remaining old mem bers even those who had not been attending the meetings This was bad enough but worse was to come Public demand for a financial statement of arena affairs prompted exMayor Alex Bell to present a financial statement to council that was unaudited and unsigned that because of its obviously misleading features Was on insult to the intelligence of the citizens of Aurora But according to press reports of the council meeting this re port was adopted by council With little or no discussion Surely a project in which the taxpayer has a debenture capi tal investment of and ordinary operating costs of over per year is entitled to more consideration of his inter ests It is very doubtful if any member of would be sat isfied with that sort of account ing of his private business Recently some members of council have deplored the un favorable publicity for the com munity because of the criticism of the arena administration The responsibility for this un favorable publicity rests square ly on the shoulders of the coun cil and its appointees the arena commission for if they had dealt with the situ ation ihe conditions warranting criticism won hi not have pre vailed The councils recent attempt to force tho mayor to sign a statement so obviously untrue indicates a very unhealthy of affairs The mayor and those members of council refused to be a parly to whitewashing op- ration are to be highly com mended The arena mess is due to in difference on the part of the council and the lack of leader ship and organization the arena commission and the prob lem will not be solved satisfac torily until the facts are recog nized and the problem con structively with I shall deal with the arena problems in a- later issue Yours truly Swindle Councillor Jones Says That Meters Drive Business Away Murray Reports 5000 Grant A general meeting of the town council was held
