when he spoke of the desired aims for our young people Through physical education Mr Runacres felt that boys and girls could be helped to reach that goal of tiptoe living Physical education was not only the education of the physi cal but the education through the physical said Mr Most urban people dont work physically They are no longer doing an honest days work In the last war it was a tremen dous shock to realize that per cent of the young men who en listed in the armed forces were unsuitable because of imperfect health As well muscle endurance coordination and mental stabil ity are developed through physi cal education It develops good health habits motor skills and develops a love of physical re creation In physical play we have a natural medium wherein the child has a real motivation and so it is possible to teach such in tangibles honesty fair play and dependability through physical education To teach our young people to be generous in winning and graceful in losing is the aim of physical education teachers Mr was addressing the annual meeting of the York- Simcoe Home and School coun cil at John Madsens Folk school Cherry Hill Farm when he was advocating the inclusion of physical education in the cur riculum of the elementary pub lic schools is not compuls ory in the Ontario elementary By Caroline Ion schools Mr was stating that it is not necessary to acquire ex pensive equipment and facilities He said that three things were needed for a good physical edu cation program in any school teachers equipment and facili ties but the greatest of these is teachers In two films which were shown of in rural schools both in and out of doors this theory was shown in practice Using such inexpensive items as balls bean bags skipping rapes old tires and sticks the children in these country schools present ed a wellrounded program of physical education under the di rection of their regular teacher Mr said that in some sections of Ontario school boards and Home and School associa tions were paying towards the teachers tuition for a sum mer course at Univer sity in physical education On the program that evening was a demonstration of folk dancing by a group of dancers from the John Folk school Dressed in Danish cos tumes these dancers adults liv ing in the neighborhood of and others from To ronto performed many interest ing and complicated European folk dances The group from Newmarket came away wishing that similar facilities could be made avail able to local residents They carried with them the enthusi asm of Mr for physical education
