the problem of the aged in United States With improved diet and medical facilities peo ple axe living longer than they did a generation ago But with the high cost of housing small er homes are being erected and so there is no place for grandparents in the young fam ilys home In the United States they are beginning to regard the Old Age Home as the final step in a long program of care for the aged It is regarded more as a hospital for the old a safe place that is there for them when they no longer can fit into the regular life in the community It gives them security to know that such care is available when they need it and by limiting its services in this way more old people are I simple sewing It would j to lead active have organized activities for the young and the not so old but nothing for our senior citi zens Too often they are left to sit alone feeling unwanted and neglected It is to this group in our community that our thoughts were directed when Miss Hope who the Red Cross Corps in Ontario and is vicepresident of the welfare division spoke at a sewing meeting of the Newmar ket branch Canadian Red Cross Miss outlined the opportunities for work in this field in the local district The people in the old age homes need us to need them she said as she recommended that perhaps a group of sewers be organized at the Home for the Aged St Some member of the Newmarket Red the homes need personal visits where they have an opportunity to talk Just to sit with them and listen to them would be as great a con tribution as any volunteer group could make for these old peo ple They buy or rent a large house and share the expenses involv ed In such plans they ere giv en direction and assistance in budgeting and similar problems by volunteer groups Another scheme is for old age cottages where elderly couples can continue living together and not be separated as they are at the Old Age Homes Foster homes operating in the same manner as they do for the young are being tried for old people Miss told a story about a cranky old man who was a great nuisance where he was boarding He was a rabid baseball fan and hard of hear ing listened to very loud broad casts of the game The people of the house didnt like sports Finally they could stand his noise no longer and asked to have him moved Working under the foster home plan where they a person to the adopting family the man was placed with a fam ily of Dodger fans Together they all listened to the gomes yelled and shouted their direc tives at the umpire Everyone was happy The new family loved the old man and in such an atmosphere he lost his cranky manner Day care again a similar set up as is given children is being tried in the States Old people who have only a single room and could not entertain their old friends are brought by volun teers to a centre where they re main for the day There they have their meals with compan ions of their own age and share their activities Social service Interviews are being provided for the aged They learn where they can find employment and what clubs or church organizations are open to them Nursing care is pro vided for them through VON services while they remain in the homes of their friends or family And finally the old age homes stand in the back ground to complete the Ameri can picture Miss re ported In facing the problem of old people in the community Miss said that volunteer workers should think not only of the occupants of the Old Age Homes but of the old people who were to be found in the chronic and Indigent wards of the hospitals in nursing homes and living throughout com munity in solitary loneliness Sometimes these old people couldnt get out to shop On their pension a month they couldnt afford the luxury of telephone and so they bought some tea and biscuits and tried to live on them All these cases need our help They require different solutions but In each case there were two basic needs one was for companionship and the other was to feel useful and import ant to someone Newmarket Social News Mr Donald fit Ca tharines weekend with Ids grandparent Mr and Mr Donald in now University of Toronto taking a course in chemical Mr and Mr and
