present for euchres and hockey games But for the im portant business of selecting the people who will handle our mu nicipal affairs we arent suffici ently interested to attend The town hall filled to Many have given the matter much thought prior to the meeting They have come ready them selves to serve in some munici pal office or with the name of a suitable person to nominate as a candidate But sometimes it is the person with a beef who takes the time to attend a nomination meeting Perhaps his taxes have been raised or he doesnt like his childs teacher so he decides to do something about it With such a limited representation of the people present it is easy to fiee how such a person could gain support unmerited by his abil ity to serve the community Time and again we hear a per son in public life saying Every body likes a scrap Give them some action and theyll give you their votes But maybe the quarrel is a personal one Perhaps the action would have been better left undone in the interest of the majority Those are a few of the dangers of al lowing a minority to control mu nicipal affairs The control might be uninten tional or unconscious but it is certainly not representative gov ernment when about 03 percent of the eligible voters select the candidates Unless you are present at the nomination you cant nominate a candi date for any municipal office We have been fortunate in the past that honest men and wo- men have tried to govern wisely on our municipal level Some have made mistakes Some have talked too much Their public statements when detached from the scene of the disagreement have appeared confused and sometimes foolish Often our councils in the past have been accused of a lack of vision In their desire to main tain a low mill rate soma have refused to
