Calvert SPORTS COLUMN Every Kentucky Derby like every other great horse race has lis episodes of glory but every renewal of this great race has its bitter disappointments and its up sets too For instance there was the Ken tucky Derby and there never has been a satisfactory answer to the question of just what happened to the great in the Run For The Roses that year Colonel R Bradley has an amazing number of thor oughbreds including four winners of previous Derbies and also the mighty Black Servant Blue Lark spur and so many others and he had furnished the sire which produced the immortal Black Gold Going up to the Derby Colonel Bradley said think is the horse I ever had won races straight as a 2year old Making Ills debut as a 3year old he won both races in which he had been entered and came up to the Kentucky Derby of with the record f unbeaten in starts apparently at the peak of his form and with the turf authorities insisting he had the Derby at bis mercy The punters made him a favorite at cents to the dollar The field he was pitted against was regarded as one of the most mediocre of many years it represented the best of the crop hut the crop at its best was not presumed to in a with Bimeleeh should win by a quarter of a mile the experts Insisted No other horse hi the race can run the mile and a quarter faster than 205 Yet who never knew greatness before nor showed any greatness afterward was too fast for that afternoon won by a length and a half time 205 Not until the defeat of the grey ghost Native Dancer last year at has there been a similar catastrophe of form and even so the odds on were much shorter so that the gTeat mystery of all the Kentucky Derbies is What was wrong with on Derby Day of Your comments and suggestions for this column at the Royal York settled satisfacr tory to all centres the problem of the Metro area which has en couraged the game of hockey some places and discouraged it in others Heres what happened First of all Newmarket Spitfires were voted a senior franchise as a Metro area club That means the Metro area for senior B pur poses was actually moved north ward to include Newmarket and ends the vexing problem of im ports housing and jobs for play ers Second it was agreed that all clubs who were playing senior or junior as a result of the Metro area ruling then on the books would regardless of any change in boundary main tain their present status if they so desired In other words despite a change in boundaries Newmar ket and keeps its present senior franchises Au rora Brampton and Dixie keep their junior B franchises with the same player rights they had previously However once any of these clubs drop out either of these series it will revert to whatever classification popula tion calls for and will not there after except with special per mission be able to play in on- other series That means that so long as Newmarket plays senior it keeps that franchise and its territorial status If it drops senior B hockey Newmarket must play intermediate or junior Third the boundaries of the area were shortened in reality to what was set out in Bill That means that Mark- ham may play intermediate or junior may play intermediate Richmond Hill may return to hockey with junior or intermediate The practical result should see the following teams in interme diate Sutton Vandorf Mark- ham for sure with Bradford and Thornton as possibilities and probably as a first year club This is a great break for hockey in these parts It keeps nobody out it does give the type of competition that Kills ingle and John have been wanting ever since the Metro area was created For junior with the change might look like Whitby Port Perry Dixie Aurora and perhaps in a strong group I had a small part in settling the Metro question and I only hope the clubs are satisfied John Ernie and Mel Thompson represented the club which by now should bo senior champs and they were tickled pink Its the best thing for hockey North York in a time said Were sick of playing rural hockey or bush- league series and the fans are tired of it too Stan Smith and Her hie were all smiles at the outcome and they saw brought to a successful culmina tion their fight for top grade hockey for Newmarket- Both gents were on hand early and did their part in explaining the situation Smith for the and his remarks were some of the best of day right to the point and of the silvertongued variety We know that there wore many who thought the en ergetic Smith would I be able to put it over though they hop he could Stan and Herb can take a how for job well done The successful campaign was a front page story in the Toronto late Saturday Greg Toronto spoke at the dinner and gave an intimate account of overseas hockey and the Russian victory I have persuaded Greg that some of the clubs in these parts might like to have him as a guesi speaker and if get no tice well in advance it can be arranged for any persons that are interested My thanks go to the clubs who were kind enough to approve another term fur me on the ex ecutive Curious enough Dr Smith who headed the polls last year ran out of the lop four being replaced the Vetera Lloyd Pollock Windsor who was de feated last year hut sat on the executive by appointment Br Smith was a fine member of the SPORTS CALENDAR May pm SS diamond intermediate baseball practice everybody is agreed that if you really ask whats wrong the answers can be summarized as long a season Shorten up the season for both fans and players No mixed groups The fans want all clubs competing
