picture of death and destruction dealt a nasty blow to the North York sports pic ture The arena at is out of commission for days to come UnionviUe arena had its motors burned out and at least two weeks seems the picture there Weston will be without ice for about the same period as the took its toll on the foundation- Aurora arena renovated from stem to stern and in its best shape in years saw the icemak ing plant flooded with four feet of water and the new floor cracked and threatened to wipe out the but fortunately like the foundation it was spar ed as if by a miracle Jack Rob inson and his doughty crew are doing everything possible to bring ice by next week and the work is being rushed Newmarket had a narrow es cape only the ice going by rea son of Hydro breakage and the foundation being saved by the northern doors through which the water poured and the hold ing of the Water St dam Stan Smith after a feverish four days has ice for Friday night and the vs StouffviUe Clippers will go on as scheduled StouffviUe arena had only a slight disruption and the two teams will resume the fussm and on Saturday at ice palace They will be two great nights for the North York fans and a fitting opening salvo for what promises to be a big hockey season While the will not be as smoothly conditioned as the Clippers in view of three prac tices and since Bomb ers have been together longer the Clippers should enter the favorites for these two but coach Cain has been busy with the pen and ink and here are some of the boys who will be the toast of Canaltown before the year is out Mary Brewer Flyers and the old re liable Ken Tupling will guard the twine cottage The defence is not finally settled but Ken the husky home brew Zip Thompson veteran and Art White will be three of the White who was with Sarnla last year is the son of Bunny White Richmond HM1 and a ne phew of and usty White Hes a crusher and junior with Gait and Ma Herb Kewley or Ken Chapman of Wheelers may get the fourth spot or perchance some one else Up front Fred smiles at Stouffvilles claims as he watches Ken Sinclair and Ken Boniface alt last year with cavort for the Redmen Andy up from the junior ranks is look ing good alongside of veteran Joe and Ron Scarello a student at who was with last year This line is a real checking line Coach Cain Don Smith and Scott of Ravinas the old reliable Thorns Bill Bradbury the stal wart and Ron of the exLumbermen are also there with the speed and talent As we have said there may be some changes before but at the weekend that looked like the squad No one can afford to loaf or take it easy there are just too many top players around Bob who was a crowd last year still lacks per mission from his American ho ckey league bosses to play in the but should get the visa Bob hasnt been out to practice as yet as wedding bells chimed for him this month its no secret the would like to have him Bob now a StouffviUe resident and new manager George will bring an experienced and cagey crew to town despite the loss of many veteran performers The only trouble is that night work and in the case of veterans Nick Bangay and Chick Webster will keep the team somewhat scanty and uncertain until the last min ute Tuffy May has decided not to play hockey and that leaves Dusty Rhodes who now lives at Oak Ridges to guard the net alone Rhodes not quite as potent as his New York name sake is still a standout Blake who worked with Rhodes last year has not yet come to terms so the alternate spot is open- So far as the de fence goes in this opener Bangay will string along with Don Mcin tosh Bill Melville and Joe One more may be added by and in any event Sir Nicholas will be back soon Up front Hal Gibson Frank Stephenson Ron Bell Ken Mc Neil Small and Lewis have all taken their posts Gibson being a somewhat sur prise starter after retirement in September Chick Webster will join this crew Best catch for the forward line so far Is Ken Crawford who was with Gait juniors last season and looks outstanding in practice of and three or four former junior players are all available for duty Its no secret that for the opener was caught short Brew er Boniface anr Sin clair were all counted upon as being StouffviUe starters until Cain unleashed the purse strings which according to the Clippers couldnt or wouldnt match with the surplus talent thats said to be around This dastardly deed should make for a battle of brains from the respective benches The withdrawal of Lumber men from the circuit leaves a well balanced fourclub group that should be evenly matched and in a dingdong battle to the stretch The exAurora Lum bermen who were scheduled to play at the new East Toronto arena dropped out when Joe Sadler and Frank Humphries failed to find a backer and de cided the boys foot their own bills as they once did and Lyndhursts will be meeting in the other bracket and it really wont be known until once around the circuit just how good all the clubs are Jack
