titled What About Shop ping Centres Newmarket dwel lers about to have two or more of these in their environs are eagerly discussing the possible j will recall a previous let ter of mine In which I claimed our downtown merchants were being sold out by Council which accepted Mr urgent plea for a centre My reasons were that the centre being so close to downtown would drain a good deal of Its business Let us look at some of Mr remarks assuming he likely knows more about subur ban shopping than any of us He says that the tremendous growth of suburban districts opened up new trade possibilities and that large islands of population mov ing to areas not adequately ser viced brought about the out growth of supermarkets I scarcely think the terms tre mendous and large islands of population apply to Newmarket Rather our town is simply broad ening out of its original site and no one district is remote from downtown Mr also says that these additions shopping centres should be built at least miles distant from the major place of business Further it has peen as certained by surveys that the ra dius of influence of shopping centres extends from 3 to miles These foregoing remarks do not auger well for the future of Main St Newmarket further strength ening my opinion that very little thought was put to the subject in Planning Committee or in Council The truth seems to be thai no one knew much about shopping centres or eared about the consequences Very truly Roy Keys Millard Newmarket The Newmarket Era Express- Thursday July Page years the groups interests have been
