shoulders of the electors this year On the ballot paper the first of December will be four questions in addition to names of candidates for public office Electors must decide the following questions Will council members be elected for two years instead of one Will all British subjects over with one year in resi dence vote in municipal elections Will council be per mitted to expropriate or buy land for industrial pur poses spending up to Will a 10year bus fran chise be granted We do not recall a year when so many decision have been left to the electors Most if not all of the above questions are requited by law to be answered directly by the people We have heard it suggested that the council is going to posh too many questions under the noses of ballot markers this year Perhaps some people who have not been following municipal events every week will consider they are not in a position to answer yes or no to questions posed But each question is significant to every taxpayer and he will have a greater opportunity in than in any other year of determining how his taxes will be spent Whether or not the law requites these questions to put on the ballot newspaper is in favor them being directed to the voters The complexity of gov ernment has reduced the number of occasions when people to make direct decisions concerning their affairs With these questions on the ballot papers December 1 Newmarket electors will have an oppor tunity to take an active part in the democratic system as it functions FOUNDING FATHERS EXPECTED MORE In many parts of the world Canadians are still Newmarket We stated that we sympa thized with the wishes of the subdivision ratepayers who were trying to persuade council to turn down an appli cation for a building permit At the same time the Era said If an oil company wishes to build a service station in the area council cannot stop it without legal grounds to do so An executive member of the ratepayers asso ciation has stated that the editorial did not mention that there is a town bylaw requiring all applications for service station building permits to go before the town council It is the claim of the executive member that the omission of this fact in the editorial put the associ ation in a bad light Had there been no byJaw the association would not have been fighting the service station proposal he pointed out The Era is unable to retract its opinion that council could not stop the service station from being built According to bylaw the application must go before council But council must have legal grounds in order to refuse the application Council was not furnished with those legal grounds There was no intention to belittle the rate payers If the editorial created an impression that the association lacked sound reasons to fight the application the Era Above all this newspaper respecLs any individual or group which takes an active interest in local politics when the motive is genuine While the Era may
