~ By FW/O President, Elsie Stephenson Summer officially arrived on June 20th. Summer activities include tending to the flower beds and vegetable garden, picking berries and going to the cottage. At the April Provincial Board Meeting, a decision was made to cancel the Provincial Conference in Ridgetown because of low registration. The Women of Excellence in Agriculture Award was updated and will be presented at the Royal Agricultural Winter Fair in November. Board Directors, Barbara Weese and Myra Kelly, are coordinators for this award. Also, the Erland Lee Community Committee (ELCC) met with the Board. The Terms of Reference for the Two Year Pilot Project were reviewed and changes were requested by the ELCC. The Terms were reâ€"written and approved in June. Repairs and maintenance at the Lee will be done as finances become available. Federated Women’s Institutes of Canada’s (FWIC) annual meeting was held June 10â€"12th in Sidney, BC. The opening ceremonies for the FWIC Convention 2012 were held the evening of the 12th. The BC tour day was on the 13th. Our tour was north of Victoria with a stop at Cowichan Bay’s wood boat museum, and then to Chemainus where artists have painted huge heritage murals on the sides of buildings, transforming a small town into an outdoor gallery. After lunch, we travelled to Ladysmith, and then Duncan with its totem poles. All the tours ended at Sooke for a smoked salmon dinner and entertainment. The plenary sessions at the Convention were held June 14â€"16th. On the 14th, three resolutions that were presented and carried included: not permitting deep Penage Road Wl's June Outing This year, Penage Road WI (North Central Area) chose to go on outings instead of having a meeting in June. On June 20th, the Branch went to the Anishinabe Spiritual Centre at Anderson Lake south of Espanola. The day included a brief history of the centre, lunch, walking the labyrinth and learning how to do bead work on a small deer hide purse. Besides gaining a new skill, Members took home a sea off shore oil or gas drilling, creating a moratorium on shale gas exploration, and revoking fees for notâ€"for-profit organizations. Six resolutions were reaffirmed. The first plenary session also had presentations and voting for President-Elect and workshops. At the second plenary session, reports were given and in the afternoon, there were two speakers. Pictured: WI Members from Ontario gathered for a photo at the Red Dress Gala, On the 16th, the FWIC President Marie Kenny, President- Elect Linda Hoy, the Provincial Executive Officers and Presidents were installed. Joy Trimble is FWIO’s new Executive Officer to FWIC. The theme for the Triennium was “Women’s Heart Health” and that evening a “Red Dress” gala was held. The next FWIC Convention will be held on June 9â€"13, 2015 in Fredericton, NB. I look forward to the Area Conventions this fall.
