Brooksdale WI "What do I do with all these apples?” you ask. The answer is â€" you eat them raw, you peel them, you bake them, you make applesauce and you slice them for an apple pie! A "Back 2 Basics” working demonstration was hosted by Brooksdale WI (Oxford District, Southern Area) at the Embro Community Centre Kitchen on the evening of October 16, 2014. Brooksdale WI Member, Katherine Grieve, assisted by Anne |nnes and Marlene Matheson, discussed seasonal availability ofthe variety ofapples grown in Ontario, with samples to view. They discussed storage, nutritional value and how to make and preserve applesauce, either through canning or freezing. Anne Innes, who is home craft judge, shared what a prize winning jar ofcanned applesauce has to have to win 1st place. The 30 participants were divided into groups to make fruit leathers, baked apples, applesauce parfaits, applesauce pancakes, a salad and applesauce with skins and no skins. The best part of the event was the tasting and socializing in the kitchen. Participants also received the latest recipe cards from the Ontario Apple Growers. The workshop was free thanks to funding from the Niagara North Federation of Agriculture. Participants were welcome to attend all day or a mini workshop of their choice. It was a very successful program which the District plans to hold again in the spring. Kent Bridge WI Kent Bridge WI (Kent District, Southern Area) held a ROSE Session on June 25, 2014 with friends and relatives in attendance. Darlene Lather and her daughter, Sharon McDonald, presented a slide showoftheirtriptoCuba and shared many interesting facts and anecdotes from their vacation. Following the presentation, Eileen LePatourel demonstrated the making of durum pasta from scratch. Her products were delicious!
