RESOLUTIONS PASSED A broad range of subjects covering many ï¬elds of activity in which rural women are keenly interested, was dealt with in the resolutions which were adopted by the Board of the Federated Women‘s Institutes of On- tario at its annual meeting held in Toronto. Particular emphasis was laid on the large number of crimes against women occurring in Ontario, and several resolutions on various aspects of this problem were carried. There were also several resolutions dealing with conditions in Northern bntario asking for better health and educational facilities in the North. One resolution stressed the neces sity of curative as well as punitive measures in dealing with sex crime inals, and recommended that the At- torneyvceneral co-operate with the Department of Health in dealing with the social evil of crimes against women. A further resolution asked that the Attorney-General establish a centre for the training of policcv women. and that municipalities in which there are women's beverage and cocktail lounges be required to include policewomcn iii their regular police forces, in relation to the number of women's beverage rooms and cocktail lounges in the municipality. The abolition of women's beverage rooms was asked for in another resolution, and one was also passed asking that a stricter censorship be imposed Dn all domestic unl imported literature, so that the morals of young people be protected against salacious reading nialeri‘ An amendment to the Crime inal ('nlle, providing for heavier senr ten s ill cases of offences against mill. 01's and young girls_w '0 passed. Resolutions regarding orthern On- tario included one as g for adeâ€" quate public health, district nursing, health inspection and dental inspecv tion services in the Northern areas as soon as suitable personnel is available. Another resolution asked the Depart- ment of Education to establish well- cquippt-d technical and vocational schools in Cochrnne North District. Ili order to provide hydro service for Northern district, 3 resolution advo- cated waiving any ruling requiring a certain number of residents per mile, and asked that. the Hydro Commis- sion proceed with the building of power lines throughout Northern On- tario. Provision for a rural mail route to serve Chamberlain and Back Townships was also sought in a resolution which was adopted. Among the many other resolutions passed were included the following: That a four year degree course in home economics for girls be estab- lished at Macdonald Institute, Guelph. That the federal government be petitioned to have Standard Time adopted as the uniform time for the entire country. That changes be made in the pres- ent grading system for food products so as to make it compulsory to buy and sell all eggs by weight. That there be more rigid and ade- quate enforcement of the Weed Con- trol Act in Ontario. That the manufacturers of con» (lensed soups be requested to market a quota of their product in 28»ounce cans, as ten-ounce cans are too small for the rural family-sized group. NEW ZEALAND VISITOR Miss Aniy Kane, former Dominion President, New Zealand Women’s Institute, now executive member A.C.W.W. has recently been the guest of Ontario Institutes. During this time Miss Kane was entertained at a tea given in her honour by Miss Anna 1". Lewis, on F.\V.I.O. luncheon at the King Edward H tel and by several branch and district Institutes.
