An Original Award By Mrs. Carl Marritt TWO MEMBERS of our Annan Women‘s Institute. Miss Agnes and Miss Margaret McKeen. both in their fourâ€"score years, acre recently honored by an unusual award. ()ur Institute decided to use money equal to the cost of two life memberships to pmvide an award for the school in the section where the Misses McKcen have lived all their lives. This sum will provide an annual award of a book to the value of $5. for a student in Grade VIII. To present the awards to the McKeen sisters an institute committee including the president \’l\llCLi them in their home and made the presâ€" entation there. There was no formal program â€"thc afternoon was spent mostly in reminisc- ing about earlier Institute days. for the Mc- chn\ have been members for thirty-seven ycarx. Then the visitors presented the award scroll and a Women’s Institute cup and saucer to each of the sisters. and their hOstesses served tea with Christmas cake and shortbread of their own baking. Purcell NNUAILY. in February. the members ol' West Fort William Institute arrange for an open meeting to which they in- vite members of every Women‘s Institute in Thunder Bay as well as visitors and friends. It is usually held in one of the church halls and an interesting program is planned. last February the special speaker was Mrs. B, (haimers. Social Worker. who told the gathering of a new endeavour. the first of its kind in Canada. which has been recently open- ed. sponsored by the United Church Board of Home Missions and the Board of Evangelism and Social Service. and with the coâ€"operation ol :1 local group. The service offered is open to everyone. and in cooperation with govern- mcnl departments and other agencies it is hoped to give counsel and encouragement to older people living alone. to work with the rehabilitation of the sick and disturbed and to help solve marital and family problems. A demonstration of square dancing was given by a group of the Junior Thunder Capers under the direction of Dee Dee Sellick.
