International Scholarship At Work HE FIRST five local women leaders to I receive training in their own country with the aid of a grant from the Lady Aberâ€" deen Scholarship Fund have now returned to their home villages in Southern Rhodesia to put into practice what they have learned. This has just been reported by Mrs. Helen Carlton- Smith. Chairman of the Lady Aberdeen Schol- arship Interim Committee for the Associated Country Women of the World. These courses were given by the Women’s Institutes of Southâ€" ern Rhodesia who have been working with Homecraft Clubs for African women and were held for three months for five selected African women. A second grant has now been given to finance further training. This marks a new trend in administering the Fund. Formerly it has been used only to bring selected women from developing countries to training centres at the present time in Great Britain, Northern Ireland. Eire. Norway. Den- mark and the Netherlands. This expansion of the program gives added impetus to the many ways in which the Lady Aberdeen Scholarship is contributing to the FAO Freedom from Hunger Campaign. The little girl is Anita Meikle ot Jamaica, sponsored bY Mosborough lnstitute in the Save the Children Proiecl. Anita is deaf and is being educated at the Caribbean Christian Centre for the Deaf. Institute mem» bers send her letters and "parcels" in addition to the DI’Qanizaticin's annual contribution of $60. SUMMER 1964 In Canada. Provincial Units of the Federated Women's Institutes of Canada have raised 35,â€" 700 for the Fund to date. This is recognized by the Canadian Freedom from Hunger Com‘ mittee as a contribution to the Campaign by FWIC in this country. The first “linlcup” for Canada may he an Indonesian woman coming to study in New Brunswick. as guest of the Women's Institute of that province. This is under consideration at the present time. Mrs. Carltonâ€"Smith states: “At each meeting we hear of ACWW Member Societies either starting a scholarship scheme of their own or offering practical help to the Scholarship project. I want to thank most sincerely everyone. whether as an individ- ual subscriber or as a member of an organiza- tion. for their contribution to this project. and for the wonderful interest shown in the Fund set up as a memorial to the late Lady Aberdeen. one of the founders of the Associated Country Women of the World. Simcoe’s Quilt and Rug Fair IMCOE COUNTY Quilt and Rug Fair S will be held at Beeton this year on July 22nd to 25th inclusive. The publicity convener. Miss Olga Mawdsley sens: "Anyone who has attended these fairs knows that they cannot be classed as ‘just another Fair.‘ They are unique and have gained wideâ€" spread interest right across Canada. and in fact South of the Border and Overseas. Quilts made by Simcoe County craftsmen and sold at these Fairs. are now being admired in homes in the United States. Scotland. Holland and in other parts of Canada. “Many of these lovely quilts were originals. designed as well as made by members of the Simcoe County Arts and Crafts Association. Members of Women‘s Institutes and Church Groups. as well as individuals. have also made quite a contribution in entering quilts for sale or for display. Many lovely heirlooms have been entered. as well as new ones of both standard and original design. "Rugs. too. are displayed to be admired or for sale. Handcrafted artiCIES of fine work- manship have a prominent place in a “craft shop section where articles made by A550cia- tion members may be purchased. "Afternoon tea is available for refreshment and relaxation in the tea room. and even meals are provided for any coming from a distance. if requested in advance.
