Quilt for a Museum By Mrs. Gordon Quinton THE NAMES OF 1,700 MEMBERS of the 79 Women’s Institutes in Grey County are listed on a beautiful blue and gold quilt that has been placed in the Grey County Museum in Owen Sound. The quilt is beautifully worked by Mrs. Gordon Quinton. Blantyre Women’s Institute, assisted by Mrs. lack Sparling of Goring, and Mrs. George Alderdice of Rocklyn Institute, who is chairâ€" man of the Museum Committee for Grey County Women‘s Institutes. In past years the ladies of the Institutes have held a Museum Ten to raise funds. but this year they decided on this special project. The various Institutes sent in ten cents for the name of each member and in this way raised $170.00. The three ladies mentioned above planned the laStout of the quilt and then applied the names. using liquid embrodiery. it was a task that took many. many hours. On each side of the quilt is a map of the county and each branch is located and numbered for ready reference. The Centre section of the quilt is gold with the names embroidered in blue. On one side are the branch and members' names from Grey West, Grey East and half of Grey Centre. On the other side are Grey North. Grey South and the other half of Grey Centre. The border is deep blue, embroidered with WINTER 1965 gold maple leaves. When Mrs. Quinton was looking for a maple leaf design. Anna: Alderâ€" dicc offered her leaf collection and it con~ tained one the exact size that was needed. The idea for the quilt started when Mrs. Howard Graham of Vandelcur institute sug- gested an embroidered autograph quilt. Mrs. Aldcrdicc felt that having each institute emâ€" broider their own block would be a lengthy procedure. so it was decided to ask all insti- tutes to send in the names for recording in liquid embroidery. Included among the mem- bers' names is that of Mrs. James West of Kemble Institute. whose age is ltil years. We tire told Mrs. West is the oldest Women's insti- tute member in the A.C.W.W. Representatives from the five districts took turns at quilting the quilt in the Owen Sound Museum. Mrs. Arthur Johnston. museum curs utor. said much interest was shown by the many visitors to the Museum during the time it was in the frames. The quilt was on display at the Grey County Women‘s Institute Rally in Durham and has now been placed in the Grey County Museum at Owen Sound.
