After an address on Safety by a police officer Beechwood put safety literature in six schools. Mallorytown reports: “Dressed a child for Smiths Falls.” (We think this means that the institute provided a wardrobe for a child en- tering the Smiths Falls school for retarded .:hildren. Ed.) When Victory had a dinner completing a contest for program points. etc. hot dinners were sent to two invalid members who could not attend. Community Builders of Pelham Union have been having a penny round up collection each year. This year they gave the money to their local school for retarded children. At Aylmer four members assisted at the well baby clinic held twice a month. Athlone bonght a piano for a blind girl. (See Cover of Summer Home and Country.) Gravelridge holds an annual Frolic at which they “raise enough money to last the whole rear." Mitchell Junior Institute joins with the Inn- ior Farmers in holding an annual Variety Night or concert and this is well attended by the peeple of the community. Lakefield “placed cemetery pots in the ’potters’ grave’ section of the local cemetery." Another item from the report is “The Red Cross has come to depend on the Institute alâ€" ways having a quilt ready to give to any family requiring immediate aid." Lake Dore has set up a library in the hall with donated books as the beginning of a community library Queen’s Line bought equipment for the pee wee heckey team and would remind other Institutes that there are municipal grants avail- able to help finance junior sports. They made their hall available for community activities. And members baked for a former member Who was ill forseveral weeks. Forester-'5 Falls: “We especially supported wmrr‘n I965 a the new community rink in an effort to keep young people healthfully busy and nearer home." Balsam Hill advertised the clinic for imâ€" munization against polio and members and their families came to the clinic. Braeside appointed a library committee and they “now have a well established library with both adults‘ and children‘s books.“ The li‘ brary is kept open Wednesday evenings and Saturday afternoons with Institute members as librarians. The report says "There is a great community interest. especially by the children.“ Shanty Bay Institute maintains a library in the store. Stewartville got the names of children in the Ontario Hospital at Smiths Falls and the Insti- tute sends a gift to each child at special times of the year. A student at the School for the Deaf. residents of the County Home for the Aged and the Children‘s Shelter receive gifts. And when a woman was badly burned and had to be hospitalized for over a month the insti- tute sent gifts so that she would have one to open each day, Leonard reports: "We purchased a [6 mm. projector and it is now available. with operator, for rental to other organizations." Eady: “We decided that since our station, store. blacksmith shop and school are gone forever we would concentrate on keeping and improving our hall. We recommend a working project to any group as it creates a community spirit and interest. We bought paint and organiZed bees to paint the base- ment Floor and walls of the hall," Warminster: “For the past five years War- minster Institute has sponsored ‘Elmer the Safety Elephant’ in the school and this year we were pleased to present the school with its fifth ‘accident free’ ribbon." Lefroy has accomplished a practical safety project in selling one dozen fire extinguishers. Gilford reports: “This year the county and township erected flasher signals at a highway intersection and a sign at a railroad crossing Donna Thompson of Glengurry, Eastern Ontario winner of the F,W.i.O_ Dorothy Fuieher Scholarship. 35
