Canadian Cancer Society Mrs. Bert Brownlee reported over three mil- lion dollars collected in Ontario last year for the tremendous task undertaken by the Cana- dian Cancer Society in its efforts to combat this disease. Education by use of film strips, speakers, poster contests, displays and newsletâ€" ters continues to he an important phase of work. People must be well informed if treatâ€" ment is to begin in time to prevent the spread of this disease. The Service-to-Patients Committee contin- ues to assist cancer patients and volunteers to render help and comfort by providing dressâ€" ings. nursing care. housekeeping services, transportation, rehabilitation and occupational therapy. Many worthy applicants apply to the Fellowship and Bursary Committee for finan- cial aid to work in cancer research. Highlight in l968 was opening of new re- search wing of the Princess Margaret Hospital in Toronto on June 19. This hospital is one of the host planned. with the most modern equip- ment on the continent and staffed by interna- tionally knOWn personnel. The government spares no expense in cancer treatment and re- search, but people supply enthusiasm and warm interest. Women’s Institute members across the province support the work of the Cancer Society in various ways. Canadian Association of Consumers The convener of Home Economics and Health, Mrs. B. Brownlee reported that the (‘.A.C. continues to consider problems of con- sumers and to direct them to proper authori- ties in order to try to reach satisfactory solu- tions.
