to show our ladies the exciting new book just off the press, Humanities in Homespun by Dr. Ethel Chapman. A more appealing book you’ve never seen â€" short stories that are good reading for any age. Planning has started for next year’s Officers' Conference and everywhere we go we have the women telling us how much they enjoyed this Conference. I would ask the membership at large â€" have you some ideas you would like to tell us about, something you would like to do, if so, drop us a note. This is your Confer- ence and we would like to hear from you. As Women's Institute branches it is my hope that you are meeting the needs of your members, and your community. Involvement is so important. It is good to remember the more ‘ people you have involved in your meetings the more successful and productive they will be. If you meet the needs of your community you will indeed be carrying out our motto for Home and Country. Margaret Zoeller The A.C.W.W. Council Meeting The A.C.W.W. Council meeting held in London, September 10â€"12 was a delight to me and a new learning experience. Perhaps the thing that impressed me most was the fine group of young women in and around London representing the constituent sodeties who regu- larly attend Council meetings. _ During the opening day a farewell was acâ€" corded to Mrs. Stella Bell, a former general secretary. Her sincerity was known around the world to be matched only by her fine work. On behalf of A.C.W.W., President Mrs. Aroti Dutt presented Mrs. Bell with a clock and tea service accompanied by a cheque for 935 pounds. Mrs. Bell told of her long association with A.C.W.W. and some of her experiences while in office and ended by saying “There seems to be an appropriate time for all things and the time was right to hand on the baton to someone else." Miss Elizabeth O'Kelly, the new general secretary, was welcomed. Miss O‘Kelly brings to her office a wide experience in Community Development work especially in the Cameroons and Sarawak. Of interest to all was the announcement that #390 Coupon unit XIII has reached compleâ€" tion so far as the original goal is concerned. In fact, further contributions received will meet FAll. 1969 the Home Economist‘s salary for two years and supply essential equipment, leaving suffi- ctcnt margin of funds to purchase extra equip- ment. The recommendation accepted at the meeting was that member societies be asked to support the remaining active beneficiary proj- ects listed under #390 unit XIII and/or â€" do- nate funds to be administered by A.C.W.W. central office for direct assistance to approved projects of A.C.W.W. societies. Where funds are donated directly to approved projects 10% should be deducted to cover the cost of admin» Istration by A.C.W.W. We were encouraged to subscribe to the Countrywoman magazine and it was interest- ing to note that South Africa has far more subscriptions than Canada. A.C.W.W. is preparing a set of slides of the staff at work which will be available through A,C.W.W. officers. One vacancy was to be filled on the General Purpose Committee and the new member will be Mrs, Pam. Pemv berton representing the Manitoba Farmers Un~ ion. The first plans relating to the Conference were released. Some of Mrs. Dutt‘s closing re; marks were that the challenge is just as great and there is need for change â€" one major change in developing countries is a need to bring literacy to mothers. There is still a need to create better understanding, better living, to accelerate knowledge and this can only come with a change in the home through the moth- ers. * it * 'THE STARS ARE GLITTERING IN THE FROSTY SKY' The stars are glittering in the frosty sky, Frequent as pebbles on a broad sea-coast: And o’er the vault the cloud like galaxy Has marshalled its innumerable host. Alive all heaven seems! with wondrous glow Tenfold refulgent every star appears, As if some wide, celestial gale did blow, And thrice illume the ever»kindled spheres â€" Orbs with glad orbs rejoicing, burning, beam, Ray-crowned, with lambent lustre in their zenes, Till o'er the blue, bespangled spaces seem Angels and great archangels on their thrones; A host divine, whose sparkling eyes are gems, And forms more bright than diamond diadems.
