Reverend Busby "Young people mirror what‘s happening in the whole soeiety. That‘s why they are blamed for being the big drug users. Today our whole society is using drugs in greater quantity than ever before!“ These statements were made by Reverend Busby, Rector at Trinity Anglican Church, Streetsville, guest speaker for the morning sesâ€" sion. His Subject was Drugs and by involving the girls themselves in short discussion groups. he outlined the intensity of drugs and their users and their harmful effects on our physical and emotional being. Reverend Busby ex- pressed many thought provoking questiOns and statements about the drug situation today. Officers of the Ontario Junior Women's Institutes -â€" Miss Marg- aret Oliphant, president; Miss Sylvia Shaw, past president; Miss Mary Hamilton, program udvisor; Mrs. Frank Schulz, secretary treas- urer; Mrs. David Brown, Junior Board Director; Miss Marion Rutâ€" tan, vice president; Miss Susan Eller, Junior Board Director. The speaker works with drug users. He ex- plained that when a person reaches thirtyâ€"five. he usually takes a goad look at his life and asks himself “What is my use in the world?" If this person has been on drugs he may at this time seek help. He explained that people take two kinds of drugs -â€" one to pick them up, the other to slow them down. "Most people," the speaker pointed out, “want to be turned off, calmed down not turned on. They Want to hide their emotions and keep things running smootle»" He went on to say that adults teach the young People that taking these drugs calms one. Nat- urally they think it is alright to use them. WIN'ER 1971 “Three areas of life cause us to live the way we do. The first is identification or lack of it. This means who we are. where we belong and what contributions we make. Often we are un- sure of this last point. The second area is lack of purpose among many of us. Our whole so- ciety has a lack of purpose in living. All peo- ple. not just young people, have the feeling it does not matter just as long as things are kept smooth, gentle and quiet. In the third area. people no longer make a distinction between morals and manners. As little Abner says, 'Bet- ter to be honest than dishonest because its nicer‘." Reverend Busby pointed Out that. "It’s the pressures on people in life today to look at life in a new light. People use drugs just to get through the (lay No longer are the} just a medicine.“ He continued by saying that. “So. ciety has labelled failure as the ultimate. No one wants to fail." “The major problem with helping drug users today,” emphasized Reverend Busby, "is that people are so hyprocritical. We hide the fact that we know drug users. We don't want to face truth so we run away from it. This is the problem with parents of drug users. They use self-protection as a way out of letting others know their son or daughter takes drugs. They would rather commit suicide than face this shame." “I see the good in everybody." concluded the speaker. “not the evil.“ 21
