Mr. Stewart When he addressed the girls, Mr. Stewart pointed out that 3,000 4-H Homemaking Clubs in Ontario meant 6,000 leaders and he commended the Ontario Women’s Institutes for providing so many leaders and sponsoring the clubs. He also commended the County Home Economists and the staff of the Home Economics Branch for the Splendid work they are doing in providing and supervising this youth training program. To the girls the Minister said, “You are here because you were chosen and you have a re- sponsibility because of your opportunity to be here. We as Canadian citizens must accept re- sponsibility for the quality of life in our homes. We can't become the other fellow all the time. What are we doing to improve the quality of our environment? Pollution starts with you and me and every time we carelessly throw away a pop can or a candy wrapper We are polluting our environment. “Most of all is the importance of quality of the character, integrity, honesty and responsi‘ bility you are developing. Develop an interest in others, in the needs and requirements of those around us.” Mr. Stewart concluded his speech by saying, "I believe that the majority of young people are above reproach. The voting age has been lowered because it is thought that the young people have the intelligence, sophistication and the degree of responsibility to handle this privâ€" ilege.” Miss Heather Rogers of R.R. 4, Odessa thanked Mr. Stewart for coming to the confer- ence banquet and for his address. Miss Frances Scott, R.R. 3, Dundalk thanked the University and Dr. Winegard for the privilege of visiting the University Cam- pus. The Banquet At six thirty Wednesday evening the girls in their prettiest dresses assembled in Creelman Hall for the annual banquet. Miss Jean Scott was chairman for the eve- ning. University President W. C. Winegard and Mrs. Austin Zoeller, President of the Fed« erated Women's Institutes of Ontario presented greetings and the Henourable Wm. A. Stewart, Minister, Department of Agriculture and Food was the guest speaker. A special guest was Miss Margaret Oliphant, President of the Jun- ior Women‘s Institutes of Ontario. FALL 1971 The Hon. W. The 1971 Girls’ Conference (A Girl and Her World) To Guelph we were invited To spend three days or four, Staying at the University‘s Lambton Hall To learn and to meet friends more. We began with games and getâ€"togethers Which ended in fun and friends. We tried to meet all two hundred girls, So, began with units and tens. We heard many speakers of interest, Including the great Doctor Chapman Who spoke of a changing society And the choices in our own life span. We also heard Miss Steckle Who is internationally known. She spoke of the homes around the world Of Things some have cooked and sewu. During the days we were here Some got involved with crafts. Others tried speaking or music; All ended with bundles of laughs.
