SEMI-ANNUAL MEETING OF DIRECTORS OF THE FEDERATED WOMEN’S INSTITUTES 0F ONTARIO Before the twenty-five Resolutions were presented by Mrs. Austin Zoeller, Chairman of the Resolutions Committee, a motion was sustained that the voting be done by ballot. After considerable information was presented. and discussion, the following were sustained. l. | J WHEREAS the one-serving pudding and fruit containers, which is a current fad es. pecially f0r the young lunch box set is espe- cially hazardous, as the pull ring lid and rim when peeled off leaves a razor sharp edge. (In one experiment, the lid edge reportedly was able to cut right through a raw beef steak, and in another was able to cut deep gashes in a raw chicken leg); THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED that the Federated Women’s Institutes request that the manufacturer of such foods reâ€"design a safer container for this commodity. â€" from Cochrane Temiskaming Area WHEREAS at present manufacturers of farm machinery are making elevators (hay or corn) with no safety device to stop them from kicking back and collapsing when the hitch end is raised past the centre point of angle, on frame and carriage. and this has caused many accidents; THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED that the Federated Women’s Institutes of Ontario request the Ontario Safety Council that such machines be removed from the market until such time that a safety device can be up plied, and/o‘r offer for sale such a device for equipment now in useâ€"from Eastern Ontario Area. .WHERBAS conservation of natural re- sources and control of environmental pollu- tion are of common concern to the whole country; and WHEREAS it is becoming very difficult and very c0stly to acquire the readily accesâ€" sible landfill sites and larger incinerators needed to cope with the steadily increasing amount of solid waste; and WHEREAS sanitary landfill sites and incinâ€" erators dispose of solid wastes, recycling of materials is a long term solution which dis- poses of solid waste and conserves our finite supply of natural resources: THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED that the Federal and Provincial Governments of Canada he urged, by the Federated Women’s Institutes of Ontario, to set defi- nite policies and programs on the disposal of solid waste, giving priority to research on SUMMER 1973 recycling and to reconversion as a treatment ot waste materials: and FURTHER BE IT RESOLVED that F.W.l.0. urge these governments to provide incentives to industries to encourage them to recycle waste and to use recycled mate- rials: und FURTHER BE IT RESOLVED that F.W.I.O. urge these governments to make greater use of mass media communications to alert the public to the ecological and enâ€" vrronmenta] problems. and to solicit public cooperation. â€"from Guelph Area, . WHEREAS at the present time, textiles and many clothing items do not have care labels securer tastcncd to the material or article of clothing: THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED that the Federated Women's Institutes of Ontario support the Consumers“ Affairs Departâ€" ment in their request for garment makers and textile manufacturers to have a perma- nent care label securely attached to the [ex- tiles or clothing articles. As the in- terest in this subject is so general. dupli- cation in research should be avoided. Pre- sorting garbage at the household level. and separate collections are suggested.
