The Home Economics Branch is concerned with the Nutrition Canada report released in November which says "50% of Canadians are overweight and unâ€" deractive“. The ï¬ndings show an iron deï¬ciency in Canadians of all ages. protein deï¬ciency in some chilâ€" dren and pregnant women: calcium and Vitamin D shortages in the diets of many infants. children and some adolescents; and some Vitamin C deï¬ciency in Eskimos and Indians, ' The ï¬ndings from the report give cause for concern about Canadian dietary habits. particularly those of women. The Department of Health hopes government and industry will â€" 1. Strengthen regulations to ensure that the Canadian food supply is nutritionally adequate. 2. Develop effective educational programmes to moti~ vate the public to realize the value of nutrition. 3. Emphasize the individual‘s responsibility to develop sound eating habits. 4. Gear the training of health professionals to meet the nutritional needs of society. We should study new nutritional labelling â€" we don’t know much about it yet. but it is coming in one form or _another â€" Start to read labels. The concern about nutrition and its far reachin effects is world wide. so much so. that ACWW. FWIC. 8 and FWIO all are working with special projects in this area.
