First 0n Island Green Bay Women's Institute was the ï¬rst branch to he organized on Manitoulin Island in I905. One of its charter members. Mrs. Mabel Ramesbottom. now resides in the Centennial Manor. in Little Current. Some of the other charter members were Mrs. Som- merville. Mrs. Ferguson. Mrs. Hindlc. Mrs. Stringer and Mrs. Cosby. Mrs. Ramesbottom remembers vividly riding to the meetings in the horse drawn buggy with her mother who was Green Bay‘s ï¬rst President. The Women‘s Institute “meant a lot to us then." the WI. was a plucc to talk. and learn and share ideas. There were picnics in the spring and a party at Christmas time. good fellowship and a lot of great singing. We met in the homes and everybody had an organ or pi- ano. We learned so much too. We talked about "how children should be trained." and discussed. "what We thought the country could do“. We would all pitch in to help when there was worl. to bc done. it was a com- bination of learning and doing. Rockvillc Women's.
