PRESIDENT ELECT A report prepared by Mrs. Noblitt, president-elect. told about a meeting of the National Action of the Status of Women when they discussed resolutions relative lo the Constitution and Bill of Rights and Freedoms. Also a Con- ference on Pensions in which FWIC was invited to partici- pate. We had shown interest about the Canada Pensions tor the housewife. the farm woman and wives involved in small businesses; and in pensions for the eEderly. It has been a general goal. of Women‘s Institutes all over Canada to promote the image of our organization by attempting to be seen as a vibrant. active and valuable voluntary group in our country. We have been changing our focus in recent years as has been necessitated by the government taking over many of the areas where we once sought to extend our services. We now are working with the government to effect changes. to mitigate social problems and to concern ourselves with current issues. To cite a few examples: in the study of rural women. Ontario WI mem- bers joined members in other provinces to assist the Council on Rural Development by accumulating data on rural women; a joint committee of representatives from New- foundland and Labrador Wl's have recently been granted a total of $26l,000 from the Department of Health and Wel- fare to work with the Newfoundland Status of Women's Council on a project of women's health in Nevvl'Oundland and Labrador; and with the support of FWIC, Prince Ed- ward Island W]. in conjunction with their Home Economics Branch, W1 program Division. helped in the preparation of a \\ ell documented presentatiOn on teenage pregnancy. An- other area in which we are changing our focus and seeking a higher proï¬le and more recognition is in legislation. All Wl members are interested in the same objectives. We must ï¬nd better methods of communications and be prepared to delve to a greater degree into the present day concerns in an attempt to actually bring about changes.
