The author. lean Cochrane. a former journalist has included all provinces and portrayed life in the oneroom school over the last 85 years in a most realistic way. yet, in a most delightful fashion. Old pictures of schools and former pupils, accompanied by human interest stories certainly will take many readers back to their one-room days. A few references are made to the Ontario Women’s Institutes Annual reports, when they encouraged health programs. garden plots. and arbor days. Also a story of Savard W.l.'s involvement in the transportation of pupils in 1922. This story was covered in Home and Country, Fall, 1974. NEW WOMEN‘S INSTITUTE BRANCH ORGANIZED Because ofthe closing of both local schools, the women ofthe community wanted a local organization. Responsibil- ity for the groundwork fell on the shoulders of Mrs. John Killeen and Mrs. Garnet Rickard. Forty persons came to the first meeting. just to talk and discuss. Two weeks later they met and officially organized on March ll, [98], under the Branch name PROVIDENCE-SHAW, DURHAM WEST DISTRICT, with 29 Charter members. Enthusiasm was running high, so much so that they Chose voting delegates to attend the District Annual and the Branch will host the 1982 District Annual. Mrs. Rod Stork contacted Home Economist Linda Cald- well, Mrs. H. Bradley, FWIO Board Director, and Mrs. F.
