Three emergency resolutions address disabled, post office and Income tax Whereas surveys Show that of the three million Canadians who use marijuana regularly or occasionally, more than one million are 17 years of age or younger; and Whereas research indicates that marijuana use often leads to harder drugs; and Whereas studies indicate that marijuana has injurious effects on the body, particularin the brain and reproductive systems and tests show that regular use causes perhaps ir- reversible brain damage; and Whereas research indicates that a higher percentage of babies born to marijuana smokers show signs of nervous system abnormalities; Therefore be it resolved that the Federated Women‘s Institutes of Ontario urge the Ontario Minister of Education and the Minister of Health and Welfare Canada, to pro- vide effective education program- mes to make the public, particularly the youth, aware of marijuana’s potential hazards. SOUTHWESTERN AREA Whereas conversion to the metric system has caused some confusion in the minds of the consumer. par ticularly the policy of changing from weight to volume (soap powders an example); Therefore be it resolved that the Federated Women‘s Institutes of Ontario request the Federal Govern- ment to enact legislation that con- sumer goods be measured in the same class as before conversion, weight to weight, volume to volume, that is if previously sold by pounds the package must bear the weight in grams or kilograms and not in litres. EMERGENCY RESOLUTION â€"- SIMCOE AREA Whereas under the present situa- tion all assistive devices such as wheelchairs, artificial limbs etc., 12 have to be purchased by the handi- capped themselves, resulting in the expenditure of large amounts of money, (or possibly donated by charitable organizations); Therefore be it resolved that the Federated Women’s Institutes of Ontario request the Ontario Government to enact legislation to the effect that all essential assistive devices such as wheelchairs, arti- ï¬cial limbs etc., be covered by O.H.I.P. thereby being made available to the disabled of Ontario.
