District Diary Where oil was first discovered - Lambton Centre District This issue ’5 District Diary was prepared by Women ’5' Institute members of Lambton Centre. Credit goes to Jackie South, Mrs. Angie Oke and Mrs. Muriel McCalIum for writing thefolia wing material and to Mrs. Mary McClemens, district secretary/treasurer for ca- ordinating their effort. The first oil well drilled in North America is in Lambton Centre District at Oil Springs and when oil was discovered at nearby Petrolia, major petroleum processing plants quickly developed in the area and now play a major role in the livlihood of the district. Women’s Institutes have been contributing to life in Lambton Centre too, since Lambton Centre became a district in 1949 and even before that when branches thrived across Lambton County. There are 242 members in Lambâ€" ton Centre and 11 branches. They are Adanac, Alvinston, Birkhall, Brigden, Brooke, Central En- niskillen, Corunna, Inwood, Moore Centre, Providence and Sunny Brooke. The district stretches from the St. Clair River in the west, Lake Huron in the north, just past Highway 79 in the east and south to touch part of Sombra Township. Mixed farming, including soya» beans, wheat and corn crops as well as beef and dairy production are part of the economy of Lambton Centre. Lambton Centre District grew out of the two original districts in the county, Lambton East and Lambton West. These two were organized in 1905, but by the late '40s were becoming too unweildly. On Friday, May 27, 1949, a combined district annual meeting of East and West was held at Petrolia. Members representing the county’s 40 bran- ches were present. After a motion by Mrs. H. McLean of Inwood, Lamb- 12 ton Centre District was organized. The district belongs to the South- western Area, Subâ€"Division 25 and covers three townships - Moore, Enniskillen and Brooke. This is an active district involved in 4»H work, scholarships and comâ€" munity work. One group recently organized a cruise on the St. Clair River while another held a picnic at a local consarvation area and invited women from Lapur County in the United States (across the river). Special events such as Tweedsn'tuir Teas are planned for the Ontario Bicentennial and local and provincial charities are supâ€" ported by all branches.
