HAL’IDN A visit to the Canine Vision of Canada Centre, in Oakville, was part of a meeting of Scotch Block WI recently. Housed in a former school, the center matches blind people with seeing eye dogs. The women learned one of the five trainers visits the soonâ€"to-be students in their homes to observe the living hab- its of that person and note any features that may be pertinent when selecting the best dog for that student. The cen- ter has accommodation for 12 students at one time and space for 44 clogs. The dogs. usually purebred German Shepherds, Golden Retrievers or Iabradors. are sometimes raised in a home for one year before being trained as at seeing eye dog. The training is very intensive, often involving hours of practice on busy city streets, where I here are crowds. traffic and many. . any noises. It normally costs about 55.000 to rovide a blind applicant with a dog. he center welcomes donations from = y organizations to offset these costs. " EABORO WI. VICTORIA WEST Reaboro WI member Leslie hurchyatd appeared on The Late how in early February after being hosen a finalist in the Be Joan Rivers or a Day Contest. Leslie sent in a 'dco tape of herself interviewing rm animals and was the only Cana‘ ian of the four finalists. ‘ APLE KEYS JWI During the last year, a great deal of is group’s energy was directed wards a fundraising campaign to t pport the purchase of an attachment _ a mammagraphy machine at stowel Memorial Hospital. (Perth orth District WI bought the actuaI machine and the attachment allows the machine to accomodate x-rays ol‘ women with larger breasts.) To raise the money, the branch decided to occupy a table at the Maple Leaf Women‘s lnsitute 20th Annual Hobby Fair. held at the local community center. The branch divided into three groups â€" baking. crafts and novelties â€" in order to have a wide variety to sell at the fair. In March 1987, the director of the radiology department at Listowcl Memorial Hospital came to the branch’s meeting to accept a cheque for $250. A engraved plaque on the machine will recognize Maple Keys contribution to the hospital. SAUGEEN JWI The 12 members of this branch keep busy with a wide range of activiâ€" ties throughout the year. In June. an annual strawberry supper is held. and for the first time, the branch held a Christmas Bazaar and Tea in Novem- ber. As well as supporting local health facilities. the branch is in the process of donating towards playground equipment for a local center.
