Quilts, Quiiis and Bears By Arthena Hecker In September 2005, the Women's Institute is hosting a provincial Quilt Showl What's in it for you. your Branch, District or Area? Read on! The name of the show is "Quilts, Quills and Bears." Quilts Individuals, Branches, Districts or Areas may send quilts for viewing. There will be a “Viewer's Choice" Award. You may also send quilts that you wish to sell. You decide the price. A 10 per cent hanging fee will be deducted from the sell- ing price. The plan is to have 800 quilts in the show. Quilt Block Competition The completed quilts will be rattled with the draw taking place at the show. Tickets will be sold at the 2004 Area Convention and at the show. Quills There is a Children’s Story Writing Competi- tionl The story is to be written at a Grade 3 level and is to be about “Quincy' the bear and his or her adventure with a quilt. Good luck! Bears There Will be a police car at the quilt show and the idea is to till the car with bears â€" sewn, crocheted and knitted bears to be given out to those needing comfort. Many otyou are involved doing this locally, but if Women’s Institute crafted together, imagine the number of bears to till a car! What great publicity for the WI! You will be hearing more about the quilts and bears later. It was important, however, to get the inlormation out to you that the Women‘s Institute is having a provincial Quilt Show. with: o a Quilt Block Competition - a Children's Story Writing Competition - quilts needed for viewing - quilts needed for sale - donated bears needed to fill a police car. 12 Home A Country, Winter 2004 Vendors There will be vendors and your Branch. District or Area can be a vendor. All you need to do is rent a space. All profits are yours. The price oi renting a space is unknown at this time since venues are still being negotiated. Quilt Block Competition Rules: - Open to all members of the Federated Women's Institutes of Ontario (FWIO). - All blocks become the property of FWIO. - Entries must be submitted by June 30. 2004. 0 Entries must include the member's name, ad- dress. postal code, telephone/tax/email, as well as the name of their Branch and District. in a sealed envelope securely attached to the back of the block for judging purposes. - Entries to be forwarded to Anne Dyas, RR 3, Cochrane ON POL 1C0. - Material - cotton - Size - 14 inches finished - the worked area to be 13 1/2 inches square, the remaining 1/2 inch to form the seam allowance. - Colour - the principle colours to be green and pale yellow on a white background; other colours may be used in conjunction with the principle colours. - Design â€" pieced. applique, trapunto; a mem- ber may enter one oi each design. - Block not to be quilted. - Block will be judged on workmanship and colour combination. The quilt blocks will be made into a guilt or quilts. They will be ral'lled, with the draw to take place at the Quilt Show to be held in 2005. Prize money for the top three blocks is $75. $50 and $25. “Till†Children's Story Writing Competition 9 As part of the Quill Show, FWIO is sponsoring competition to choose a winning story about a teddy bear named Quincy and his or her great adventure with a quill. The winning story will be published as a children‘s book oi special interest to Grade 3 level readers. The judges will be looking for a story that a child would enjoy an adult reading aloud to them, as well as a story that a child will enjoy reading on their own. Competition Rules: - Open to all members of the Federated Women's Institutes of Ontario (FWIO). All entries must tell an original story in the author‘s own words. - Text to be 500 to 750 words printed or typed double-spaced on B ‘/2 x 11 inch plain paper. - Qualified judges, chosen by the committee, will not be Women's Institute members; the judges' decision shall be final. o The committee reserves the right to edit any entry where necessary (e.g. sentence struc- ture. etc.). - FWIO will have the winning story profession- ally illustrated by an artist of their choice before publication. Please do not illustrate your story. - Entries may not identify the author in the l. of the story. o Entries must include the member‘s name. ad- dress, postal code, telephone/fax/email, as well as the name of their Branch and District. in a sealed envelope securely attached for judging purposes. Entry must include the signed Flelease Form. Please ask your Branch Secretary for a copy of this Form. . Deadline tor Submission - Entries must be postmarked no later than May 30, 2004, and mailed to FWIO clearly marked as follows: FWIO. All entries become the sole property of FWIO. - Prize - $350 - The book will be launched in September 2005 at the Quilt Show and the author will be pre- sent to autograph copies.
