Board 'Bi’ieiiiigs August 21-23, 2000 e Board of Directors of the Federated Women's Institutes of Ontario (FWIO) gath- ered for a three-day meeting at the Provincial Office from August 21 to 23. President Christine Reaburn happily announced thattheAgnculturaI Adaptation Council (AAC) is giving FWIO a $7.300 grant towards the ACWW Conference in 2001. She remarked that from the time the FWIO Fundraiser began preparing the proposal to the AAC to the time the grant was received was nine to ten months. This is a prime example of the time lines involved when applying for funding. The following are highlights of the August meeting. Resolutions From the Ivanhoe Wt. Perth South District 0 That FWIO lobby the Government of Ontario to enact legislation to enforce stiff penalties and higher fines for Speeders and aggressive drivers. 0 That FWIO lobby the Government of Ontario to enact legislation to have additional rest areas and wider paved shoulders on roads to combat driver fatigue and to have safety zones for law enforcement officers. - That FWIO lobby the Government of Ontario to enact legislation to reinstate helicopter patrol of major highways. especially the 400 series. Recommendations - That the District Tweedsmuir Curators record the whereabouts of Tweedsmuir Histories from disbanded Branches in their District (see page 43. FWIO Handbook). - That an increase in the cost of dues paid for the Erland Lee (Museum) Home be increased from 60 cents per member to $1 per member per year effective for 2001 fees. Budget Discussions Finance Coordinator. Lynn Ruigrok. presented the Proposed Budget for FWIO for the upcoming fiscal year. 2000-2001. To facilitate the budget discussion. the Finance Coordinator outlined a detailed explanation of any increase or decrease in the budget versus the 1999-2000 budget fig- ures. Board found this useful when reviewing the budget. Several recommendations from the Budget Committee were approved by the Provincial Board. Fundraising Notable recent fundraising developments in- clude at $7.300 grant from the Agricultural Adaptation Council, an $11,500 grant to the Erland Lee (Museum) Home from the Hamilton Community Foundation. a $1000 grant from the JP. Bickell Foundation. and a $1000 grant from the George Lunan Foundation. Numerous dona- tions and contributions. as well as gifts in-kind have been received due to the efforts of FWIO's Fundraiser, Mike Paquet. Education Coordinator’s Report and Recommendation for New Theme Jean King, FWIO Education Coordinator. re- ported having linked up with her committee chairs via teleconference this past summer. One outcome of this teleconference was a recom- mendation to Board that Women's Institute programs in Ontario adopt the United Nations theme. the lntemational Year of the Volunteer. for the year 2001. They felt that this would in no way detract from or interfere with the ROSE Health Program. or other programs that may be developed under the auspices of ROSE â€" rural antan'o sharing educa- tion - FOR WOMEN. The Education Committee will conduct re- search and ask members for ideas for future programming direction and possible themes. FWIO. in partnership with the RAWF, will present their "Excellence in Agriculture Award” to a woman who is a Canadian citizen residing in Canada who has contributed to the RAWF in an outstanding manner over a period of time. Show your support of this First Lady of the Royal by attending the presentation of the Award at the Opening Horse Show. The RCMP Musical Ride will also be featured the opening night. International Quilt Block Competition The Associated Country Women of the World (ACWW) Triennial Conference Committee and the Ontario Coordinating Committee (OCC) in- vited all WI members last fail to enter an International Quilt Block Competition. The al- most 400 submissions are being made into quilts and cushions and will be rattled With the pro- ceeds going to Conference 2001. Tickets for the quilts and other items will be sold at the Women’s Institute Booth at the Royal Agricultural Winter Fair. When you stop at the Booth. be sure to ask. The draw will be made at the close of the ACWW Conference in 2001. FCE Michigan Exchange A member of the Federated Women's Institutes of Ontario (FWIO) will be selected to participate in the lntemational Exchange and Study Pro- gram with the Michigan Association for Family & Community Education. The purpose of the pro- gram is to increase the understanding of others and to help FWIO members gain a deeper insight into the people of another country. The Exchange will occur some time between May and October over a three to five day period at a time agreeable to the hostess and applicant. FWIO has made up to $500 available to the successful applicant to help cover the cost of travel (etc). Watch for more details.
