The Institute‘s first Tweedsmuir His- tnry Book was stolen out of a member's car four years ago as she was delivering It to get a microfilm copy made. It was a great blow to the group. who had spent countless hours cotttpiling the chronicle Because the Tweedsmuir volume was stored in a box from the LCBO, the thief thought they were steating a box ot‘liquor: instead, they lllilLlC oil with irreplaceable pictures donated to the cause. Members say it look them awhile to get over lhe shock of their loss. and even longer to think about tackling the project again. So it is with great pride that tlte group shows a visitor the fruits of thetr labour. The attractive book illustrates the history of the Institute, which began out of the Salem Methodist Church in I916. Eleven years later it became the Salem~ Nilestown Women‘s Institute The committee charged with compiling the Tweedsmuir History of Salem-Milestown are. from left to right. Myrtle Wright, Betty Lawson, Gwen Bales, Georgina Carroll, Elizabeth Thompson and Bertha Vanhie. The history of Nilestown and area. its people, businesses, farms, schools and churches is all carefully detailed. It‘s a work in progress. There are lots of blank pages left for biographies and spaces left for pictures. The Salem»Nilestown Women's Instiâ€" tute will make sure this written history is not lost again. It has all been saved on a computer disk that will be carefully locked away.
