Cross Country Calendar Brigden Wl, Lambton Centre Together with the neighbouring Be rkhall WI, this Branch held a Hobby and Fun Night. Each member was given a couple of minutes to display and talk about a hobby. Members enjoyed a great evening of fellowship as they sang the Centennial Song, presented several humourous readings and played games and contests and awarded prizes. Temiskaming District Wl Ninety Women‘s Institute members from this District participated in “A Day for You“ â€" a day-long event organized by the District. Activities included candle making, scarf ty- ing and akeynote address by localjournalist John Hunt on the state of affairs in Canada. Hudson WI, Temiskaming South Members ofthis Branch have been busy knit- ting squares for the Mazabuka Association for the Disabled in Southern Zambia. After one month's effort, 200 squares had been knitted. “It will be nice to know that these knitted squares will go to help a sick child in another country," reported Dorothy Greenwood, Secretary Treasurer of the Branch. Prescott District WI The second annual combination euchre. bridge night and bake sale was a great suc- cess for the seven Branches in this District. Each Branch contributed a loaf of sandâ€" wiches. one part of squares and a $5 donation towards the prize money. All items for the bake sale were also donated. West Oxford WI, Oxford South Pe0ple and pancakes were a pepular com- bination on the last weekend in March at the 28th Annual Maple Syrup Festival organized by the West Oxford W1. A crowd of 1,600 people lined up in anticipation of a maple syrup soaked pancake and sausage breakfast. In exchange for a percentage of the profits, Beachville Legion members flipped the pan- cakes. About $3700 was raised for a number of causes, including Easter Seals, the Salvation Army. local ball clubs, the Erland Lee (Museum) Home, the Adelaide Hunter Hoodless Homestead, and local sholarships and 4-H Clubs. West Oxford members are already planning for the 29th Festival. 14 Home & Country, Summer '96 Strabane WI, Wentworth North As part of an international program, mem- bers of this Branch prepared various dishes from across the North American Continent. Their guest speaker, Kathy Morgan. spoke to the group about her stay with Innuyiak (Eskimo) on Queen's Bay in the North West Territories. Brant North and South District WI The Women's Institutes in Brant County have reported that they are very active, with nine Branches in Brant South and six in Brant North. The two Districts conduct a yearly short course. presenting one-day seminars on various subjects. Like all Women’s Insti- tutes, the Branches of Brant County step in at any opportunity: to help maintain flower gardens in their communities; to sponsor scholarships at local schools; to enter exhibv its and provide cash prizes at fall fairs; to cater local events; and. to support local chart» ties through funding and volunteer hours. Clachan WI is Tuned in to Community Needs The West Elgin Senior Elementary School Band’s appeal for funding to repair and replace musical instru- ments was met by the Clachan Women’s institute. Norton Public School in Burlington, which the Branch was also in- strumental in opening; a farm kit for use by the local library; a large evergreen on the school grounds to be decorated each Christ- mas; seventy Cookbook ’rfor Canada's Kids for the school library and Home Economics classes; monetary donations to the school library and the French and Mahaffy Legal Funds. Each month a looney bank is set out to collect for the FWIO Headquarters Fund. Clute WI, Cochrane In celebration of International Women's Day. the Clute WI. together with members of the local Parents' Resource Centre and CUPW (Postal Worker‘s Uniori). held a “Knit-In.“ Squares were knitted to send to Zambia, It was so much fun that the group decided to continue the get-together on a monthly basis. Nobleton WI, York Centre At the York County Women’s Institute Rally, the Anna P, Lewis Scholarship was won by Gail MacTaggart, daughterofMuriel MacTaggart of the Nobleton Branch, Bridgeport WI, Waterloo North Members of this Branch toured the FWIO Headquarters followed by a picnic lunch at the surrounding Guelph Township Park, They also reported that they are twinned with the ColchesterW'I in Edmonton, Alberta, and the Norwich W] in Norfolk, England. .‘ .l
