The idea came from one of the members who read of a similar contest in a small town in the US. Throughout the summer months. the event was organized locally. The contest not only increased the awareness of the Women’s Institute, it stimulated community pride and involvement. Local businesses. organi- zations and residents donated the prizes. so every entrant received something. and our Branch made a few dollars from the nomi- nal entry fee. Because we have already done the ‘leg~ wOrk.' in terms of developing the posters, entry forms and newspaper press releases (etc.). our members are making this infor~ mation available to other Branches interested in hosting their own Contest. Erland Lee Award Winners ast year. the Erland Lee Award was pre- sented to the following men from the Province of Ontario: Victor Beachin started out taming in Wain- tleet Township in Welland County. During the war he went to work for Atlas Steel in Wel- land; he remained there until his retirement in 1970. Victor supported Women's Institute work and backed his wife, Hilda. 100 per cent. The Erland Lee (Museum) Home became the Beaehin residence in 1974. when Hilda became the Hostess. in the decade they lived at the Lee Home. Victor took immaculate care at the lawns and gardens.
