Cross Country Calendar Garnet WI Marie Trainer - Mayor of the Town of Haldimand, farther and mother - spoke to this Branch. She explained and answered questions about how the money is spent in their municipality. Garnet WI also we]- comed Christine Bartlett, owner of Video Inventory Service, to one of their meet- ings. She emphasized that people should better protect themselves in case of fire and theft by having a video appraisal of their homes. West Montrose WI Chris Fletscher, from Elmira Municipal Affairs, spoke to this Branch about the restrictions and byla'ws regulating dog owners in both urban and rural areas. Mansfield WI The Mansfield Women's Institute is looking forward to the opening of the new Dufferin County Museum and Archives, presently under construction in their comâ€" munity. A major fund raising drive has been underway as the project nears its completion date of July ‘94. The public must raise $250,000. The members of this Branch voted to donate $500 to the cause, as well as to search their attics and baseâ€" ments for artifacts that may be of interest to the Museum. Gorne WI Members of this Branch planted a Fraser Fir tree in downtown Gorrie as a pennaâ€" nent Christmas tree. Simcoe North District WI Annie Fox, a member of the North River WI. donated a quilt top to this District to complete and to raffle at the Coldwater Fall Fair. The quilt was set up at the Fair and many members took turns quilting. Over $1000 profit from this project was donated to the Headquarters Fund from the Simcoe North District which is comprised of seven Branches: Coulson, Eadyâ€" Grenard, Ebenezer, Jarratt-Creighton, North River, Vasey and Warminster. 14 Home & Country, Spring '94 Bethesda-Reach WI This Women’s Institute Branch erected a sign in the community of Bethesda on the original site of the Bethesda United Church (1882-1952) and Reach Township School #10 (18761963). Although the two buildings - which were the hub of the community - are no longer there, this group felt that a sign should mark the historical site of the hamlet and the roots of their Branch. The Baiiieboro WI presented the Five Counties Children's Centre Foundation with a $1000 con- tribution to its Endowment Trust Fund. David Adams, Managing Director of the Foundation, received the cheque from Betty Joan Greer (left), President, and Joyce Syer (right), Public Rela- tions Officer, Balliabam WI. The interest received irom the Endowment Fund is used to further the work needed for children whose disabilities range from mild motor impairments and speech disor- ders to those more serious disabilities. Spanish River WI Members of the Spanish River Women‘s Institute undertook a local cemetery bean» tification project. And at the “Beans and Baskets" Workshop sponsored by the Sud~ bury West District they made quilted baskets. Sudbury West District WI This District put an exhibit together about the Women‘s Institute; it was on display for several months at the Massey Public Library. White School WI In 1943, the members of the White School W1 were each given a quilt block and asked to embroider the names of perâ€" sons living in the area. The sum often cents was paid to have a name stitched on a block. In 1944, the quilt was raffled and Joy (Smith) Wilkin became its proud owner. In 1992, Mrs. Wilkin returned quilt to the White School Branch who de cided to turn it over to the Bruce County Museum in Southhampton for safeâ€"keep- ing and future reference. Halton District WI The Halton District Women’s Institute was responsible for catering coffee and muffins at the “Country Quilt Fest" last year at the Ontario Agricultural Museum in Milton. Brant and Norfolk Districts WI The Districts in Brant and Norfolk Coun- ties decided to join forces and conduat short courses. The response was over- whelming to the topic chosen - “Easy Noâ€"Sew Christmas Decorations." Flyers were distributed to the general public and at the fall fair. Five different locations and dates were sold out with class sizes of 30 each time. Participants received a manual and the materials to make at least five different decorations in the all-day event. Skilled WI members instructed. C decorating was chosen as the topic for/L Spring ’94 Short Course.
