What Ever Happened to the Resolutions? RESOLUTIONS Resolutions are one way to change a law that‘s wrong, It tells our MP's that we want a Canada that‘s strong, An issue on pollution or a traflic rule that‘s needed, Will tell our politicians that these items should be heeded, So get together with your Branch, be part of the solution, Stand up, speak out, be counted and form a resolution! Written by Dorothy Dabble, Birr WI Here is abrief update of the resolutions passed at the FWIO annual meeting last November (See page 6, Spring 1993 Home & Country for the resolutions). 1. The Federal Government committed $25 million for research, standards of care and exchange of information on breast cancer. 2. The FWIO will work with the Ontario Breast Screening Program to encour- age women to have mammograms and to learn about Breast Selfâ€"Exami- nations. 3. Canada Postresponded that they will continue with its century-long asso- ciation with community retail businesses in order to keep costs at reasonable levels and avoid maintain- ing post offices. 4. The Ontario Ministry of Education recently released a document - Com- mon Curriculum, Grader 1-9 - outlining what students should achieve by grades 3, 6 and 9; it places a priority on language and mathemat- ics and the use of methods necessary to achieve its objectives, including letter clustering and phonics. 5. Health officials feel that teaching adolescent females about breast self- examinations would cause unnecessary anxiety amongst girls experiencing breast changes during their menstrual cycle. 7. The Government of Ontario argues that if the Planning Act deems all lots created prior to 1979 as separate par- cels, many problems could be created for municipalities and a great demand made on local services. 8. The Government of Ontario does not believe that the incineration of scrap tires is the best possible use of valu- able raw material; however, they are currently supporting projects which divert Ontario’s used tires from dis- posal sites. 9‘ The Government of Ontario believes that with a cautious, controlled ap- proach, casinos will enhance community economic development and generate government revenues. 10. See number 5. 11. The Ontario Ministry of Transporta- tion passed this resolution on to the Transport Operations Branch for de- tailed review. 12. The Govemment of Ontario provided several million dollars to the Ontario Provincial Police for recruiting more officers. 13. Both the Federal and Provincial Govâ€" ernments believe that health care should be available to all, and to levy charges would be contrary to the Can- ada Health Act. 14. See number 11. 15. Agriculture Canada added this reso- lution to the list of food and drug regulations under review. 16.
