In 1925 St. George‘s celebrated it‘s Golden Jubilee with 7 extensive renovations to the church building. The interior walls were lined with 8.0. cedar and painted, and a new brick chimney built from basement to above the roof. Also during that d year a chapter meeting of the Rural Deanery with 10 clergy attending was held here for two days. Rev. Gardner returned as assistant to Rev. Spence for that summer. The following year 1926 saw the exterior of the church painted. In lQ30.an electric lighting system was installed in the church at the cost of $100.00, a new picket fence built and painted along the front of the churchyard, and the Rectory and Parish Hall entirely painted. A donation of $160.00 from the Diocesan w. A. assisted in paying for this work. Improvements 3 39““ were continued in the Cemetery the following year also. ‘ 4 |' In the depressions '30's work gangs were formed to provide work for men to aid in the support of their families. Road gangs building and repairing roads were seen in the area and Rev. Spence was appointed Chaplain for these men by the Department of Highways. In 193u the Diocesan W. A. again helped St. George's with a donation of $150.00 to buy a pipe organ from the Presbyterian Church in Lakefield. Although Rev. Spence continued to live in the village he was officially retired in June of 1937 after 19 years of active ministry. He did not hesitate, however. to step into the breaeh many times when needed by his church in the following years until his move to Bridgenorth in 1952. The Parish of Apsley had
