EMMANUEL ANGLICAN CHURCH *#*#*#Â¥**#*¥¥****#*Â¥$*** (The following is a copy of article printed in The Arnprior Guide - February 1969) The birth year of the Anglican congregation in the town of Arnprior was 1861, the same year as the incorporation of Renfrew County. Rev. Alex Morris came from Fitzroy Harbour to hold services in 1861. Services were held in the period of 1862-1863 by Rev. T.Bonsfield in private houses and then in the Orange Hall over the Blacksmith shop. The first class for confirmation was presented by the Rev. Otis Hackett in 1863 in the upper flat of the Arnprior Public School House. During the same period the Rev. Dr. Schaffranch conducted services in the German language, and the Church records Show the marriage of persons with the birth place recorded as Prussia. The Rev. C.T.Denroch (1867-1870) was rector when the Church and Rectory was built in 1869. The Rev. E. W. Beaver was rector in 1870-1878 at which time some of the present trees were planted and The Rectory was first covered with vertical wood :idiig but during 1878-188h which Rev. K.C.Jones was rector, it was veneered with ric . The Chancel, Vestry and Tower were built when the Rev.A-F.Echlin (188h-1886) was rector of the Parish. The Parish became self-supporting during his term. The Rev. T. Bailey (1886â€"1890) was rector at which time the Chapel was furnished, the Church painted and the present west window put in the Chancel. The Altar Rail was installed and the present prayer desk donated. 1890â€"92 Rev. W. Mercer served as rector, and from 1392â€"99 Rsv.A.H.Coleman was rector. During 1899-1906 the Rev. T.J.Sti1es was rector. During his office the Church Spire, Church Porch and the Organ were added to the furnish- ings of the Church, The Church was plastered and decorated, the present oak and ash pews and electrical fixtures were installed. Rev. Arthur Whalley was rector of the Parish during 1906-1920 and the water motor for the organ was installed. In 1910 the Porch. of the Vestry was built, and the War Memorials were installed in 1919. In 1920 Rev. R.C.Saddington became recor and in l92h the new bell was in- stalled. During this time the lot next to the Churcha upon which the Parish Hall is now built was donated by Eric McLachlin. The H.A.E.Clarke (1930â€"1933) was followed by Rev. Thomas Iveson who servsd from 1933-19LO. This was a difficult period in the history of the Church as it was in the economy of the nations. Despite this, the Restoration Fund of the Church in Canada was well subscribed to by the parish and parish indebtedâ€" ness paid off. The Rev. Mr. Iveson left Arnprior to become rector in Carleton place,6and upon his retirement in 19h3 became organist of Emmanuel Church un- til 19 2. From l9hO-l9h7 Rev. H.O.Hodder was rector and during this period the organ water pump was replaced by an electrical motor. Rev. R.G.Fiander became rector of Emmanuel Church in 19h7-196h. In 1962 a much needed and long desired for Parish Hall was erected. In 1966 the Bishop of Ottawa designated the hall the Carlton Reid Memorial Hall in memory and appreciation of the service given by Carlton Alfred Reid. Rev. R.H.Hobbs came to Emmanuel in 1964. At the beginning of 1969 the parishioners of Emmanuel were saddened by the departure of Rev. Hobbs, his wife and family. Mr. Hobbs has been appointed rector of St. John the Divine, in Nepean. Under the leadership of Mr. Hobbs the parish of Emmanuel has grown and flourished, particularly in the work with young people. A parish potluck supper was held on 26th January, 1969, as a farewell for the Hobbs family. Mr. and Mrs. Hobbs were presented with tickets and reserva- tions for a week's holiday in Nassau. We all wish them well in their new parish and we will miss them very much. Rev. Allan Meakin succeeds Rev.Hobbs and begins his new duties on March 16, 1969. In 1968 two youth groups were active the A.Y.P.A. whose president is Jack Sadler, Jr., and the Anglican Youth Croup whose president is Michael Fitzpatrick. A Junior choir of over forty boys and girls sing at the nine-thirty service every Sunday.
