CALVAR! BAPTIST CHURCH tflttihrttttttiwikt’btt’rt The Calvary Ehptist Church in Arnprior was started in June 19h0 when services were held in homes of members, and the first Pastor was Rev. Hrynie Owens whose zigrs of ministry until 1957 were ones of pastoral sacrifice and inspiring leader- p. Premises were rented at 56 Madawaska St. and ultimately purchased in 19k5. The Sullivan Construction firm then performed renovations that accommodated the growing congregation and made more suitable the surroundings. After an extended period of supply Pastors, the Rev.Neil D. Esattie came to Arnprior in the Spring of 1959 and in his two-year pastorate the property on Edey St. was purchased in a far-sighted decision. In 1961, the Rev. D. C. Berry, served a brief tenm as Pastor, and sorrow fell upon the Church when he died, leaving a wife and daughter. However, his memory will be perpetuated by the donation of the Communion Table in the new Church by his family. Pastor Harry was followed by Rev. MJ.Gibson, who served for three years be- fore going in 1965 to Wastport. Under the leadership of their present pastor, Robert A. Baker, on November 28, 1965 the sod was turned for the construction of their new church home. The new building was dedicated to the glory of God and the propagation of the Gospel of Jesus Christ on Sunday, May 15, 1966. The Pastor has been very ably supported by the Board of Deacons composed of Chairman William Slater and members Don Slater, Don Glenn and Ellwood McCrea. It is of interest also to recall the first Board in 19h0 consisting of Chairman George Bond of Braeside, Walter Slater, Emerson Scheel and Ellwood McCrea. The Ladies' Dorcas Society of the Church is presently presided over by Mrs. Sven Frolander (whose son Leonard is a third year student at Central Bap- tist Seminary, training for the Baptist ministry), and has been ever present in its contributions to the advancement of Calvary Baptist. In rECent weeks the Calvary Baptist Church has had the highest Sunday School attendance in its 27â€"year history. At present, Mr. Don Slater is Senior Superintendent and Mr. Ken Leslie is Junior Superintendent of the Sunday School, with Mr. Sven Frolander serving as Secretary-Treasurer. A strong Young People's group have as their sponsors Mr. and Mrs.Don Slater. The Calvary Baptist Church holds its annual Missionary Conference in the Spring of the year and Deeper Life Services in the Fall. several new members were received into the membership of the church in 1968. Since no church is greater than its prayer life, the membership of Calvary Eaptist Church unanimously passed a motion at its annual business meeting, January 21,1969 declaring 1969 a year of prayer and adopting as its motto,"Pray without ceasing4 from 1 Thessalonians 5:17. Calvary Baptist Church realizes there is more to life than eating, sleeping and working; more to satisfaction than energy and entertainment. The answeris to be found in the message of the Bible. That is why Calvary Baptist Church and Pastor stand on call to serve the community, both in the heart and in the home. The month of February has been declared "Heart Month“ at Calvary Baptist with February 9th designated as “Heart of Arnprior Sunday". Pastor Baker expresses appreciation on behalf of Calvary Baptist Church to Mayor Fitzpatrick and town councillors for helping to make "Heart of Arnprior Sunday" possible. June 1st will mark the 29th anniversary of Calvary Baptist Church in hold- ing forth the Word of Life in Arnprior. The Pastor closed his annual report to the church with these words,"To be much for God, we must be much with God." (The foregoing is a copy of article published in The Arnprior Guide - Feb.,l969)
