\‘ I The History Of Cordova Mines Cordova Mines vilIsge, situated on the boundary road between Hastings County and Peterborough County in the townshins of Marmora and Belmont, was first known as‘werriston; The postâ€" office of"Warriston. Was one mile north of the present school house. Cordova, as it is known now; was settled about 1838. Gold was first discovered by Au W- Csrscallen, Captain John O'Neil of Marmara, Fred Lingham of Belleville and Harry Strickland of Peterborough. The land on which the mines are located was purchased by the four men from 5 widow, Mrs Mary Jane Brown, for $1500.00 for the 200 acres. They in turn sold their holding to an English syndicate who started the mining operation in 1898. Mr. J} Kerr was General Manager. Three large shafts were sunk, one to a depth of 1150 feet with large drifts ruvring away from the main shaft. Several company houses were Built. these were rented to the workmen. A large staff house and large double house in which staff members lived. The waters at Deer Lake Falls were harnessed, a power house brilt near the falls, from which Dower was generated to supply the mine buildings 2% miles away. A large flwne, portions of which is still in existance carried the waters from the falls to the mine, this produced the steam to ooerate the mï¬chinerym Tom Rogers an Englishman was the first power house onerator.
