ELGIN - SAUGEEN CENTRAL SCHOOL At the regular monthly meeting, Port Elgin Public School Board felt that it must give attention to provision of additional accommodation for its 323 students. At the request of Saugeen Township School Area Board, a Joint Meeting was held with the Port Elgin Public School Board to discuss the possibility of amalgamation. It was decided to invite the Inspector, Mr. v.5. mamas, to attend a future meeting and explain amalgamation procedures for the two Boards and the representatives of Councils of Port Elgin and Sangeen. Inspector stated that some advantages of larger :c ral schools are: better teaching, berter equipmenr‘ avm‘d- once of duplication of facilities which would occur if each Board built its own school. The earliest effective date for amalgamation would be January l, 1967. After several joint meetings the two Boards and Cnuncil Representatives met with the Bruce County Consultative Committee. Amalgamation agreement Was reached on the understanding Lhat any new building would be on a new site Bruce County Ely-Law #1931; added all of the Port Elgin Public School section to the Township School Area of Saugeen effective January 1, 1967. District Inspector estimated required accommodation at 15 Rooms plus Auditorium if an all-new school were to be built; 12 Rooms plus Auditorium would sufFicp 1f the 3 Rooms of Port Elgin Public School were to be retained. Inspector requested tentative approval of a bum lding proposal. Accommodation requested from Department of Education was 12 Classrooms, 1 Library and 1 Playroom. A Department of Education letter stated that abandonment of 3 Rooms at Port Elgin Public School would result in a Grant reduction of $49,200.00 on the new building.
