Castleford Women's Institute Tweedsmuir History 2 of 24 Publisher’s note When it was time for the story of Horton Township to be put on to paper there was an I author who had been in training for the fob for years: Doris Humphries adopted the township when she wedded and she became its writer~in- residence back in the 1950's. Her lifelong in- terest in communicating with people through . her teaching and her writing made her the obi ‘ vious one for the job. But. like most successful l women. Doris had another attribute â€" behind i her was a good man, Campbell Humphries. I i t i It is a sad but familiar refrain that none of us ‘ record our past soon enough. This book is an at- tempt to change that lament. Here is some of the history of Horton Township in writing. Future generations can thank the Castleford Women’s Institute and all who contributed to 1 this book for the work of recording the past. t Perhaps this book can be a source of encourage- ment for others. If you want an easy way to pass on knowledge and pleasure, buy some tapes and talk into a tape-recorder. Pass on what you know and generations ahead will be grateful. During the two years that this book was being put together, many people who were a part of Horton Township and who knew its story as far back as eighty and ninety years ago have paseed on. Some of that story is gone for good. Some of it can still he recorded for those to some i like Christopher Humphries, whose grandmother Doris took a day off while completing this book to visit him in May 1986 when he was one day old. We hope you enjoy the book. D. W. McCuaig, publisher 1984-1986 /6
